3º) Definition of "programme music". Indicate at least one example in your
definition (work and composer).
Programme music is a type of classical instrumental music based on
extramusical elements such as a plot, a text, feelings, nature ... Sometimes, this
type of music can be descriptive (For instance: "The Four Seasons" by Antonio
Vivaldi).
Gregorian chant was Church´s official chant during the Middle Ages. It was
part of the liturgy (the mass), a type of music for praying. This chant is
monodic, written in Latin and performed by monks (all male choir) with no
instrumental accompaniment (a cappella). Monodic texture means that all the
singers sing the same melody.
b) Which type of music is it? Classify it as precisely as possible:
This is an instrumental and symphonic piece. It is classical instrumental
music that is based on extramusical elements because the title of this piece
refers to a river, the most important one of the composer´s home country.
Therefore, it can be considered as profane music, programme music, as well
as nationalist music due to the symbolic and historic character of this river.
