Programme music is a type of classical instrumental music based on
extramusical elements such as a plot, a text, feelings, nature ... Sometimes, this
type of music can be descriptive (For instance: "The Four Seasons" by Antonio
Vivaldi).

4º) Definition of “dramatic vocal music”. Indicate examples of dramatic


vocal forms in your definition:
Dramatic vocal music is a type of vocal music that is a mix of theatre and
music such as the opera or the musicals. It is based on a plot or story with
different characters. The soloists are both singers and actors who are
accompanied by an orchestra or a band.

a) Which type of music is it? Classify it as precisely as possible and
indicate when it was composed:
This is medieval religious music. It is Gregorian chant. This chant is
probably performed during a religious ceremony or as a concert vocal piece.
Characteristics of this music (use complete sentences to answer the
question):
Refer to its social function, form, texture, text, instruments...

Gregorian chant was Church´s official chant during the Middle Ages. It was
part of the liturgy (the mass), a type of music for praying. This chant is
monodic, written in Latin and performed by monks (all male choir) with no
instrumental accompaniment (a cappella). Monodic texture means that all the
singers sing the same melody.
b) Which type of music is it? Classify it as precisely as possible:
This is an instrumental and symphonic piece. It is classical instrumental
music that is based on extramusical elements because the title of this piece
refers to a river, the most important one of the composer´s home country.
Therefore, it can be considered as profane music, programme music, as well
as nationalist music due to the symbolic and historic character of this river.

Which type of instrumental ensemble performs this piece? Is there a solo


instrument?
This piece is performed by a large symphony orchestra with no solo
instrument.

What is the texture of this piece? (Justify your answer)


We can listen to different melodies sounding at the same time. As a
conclusion, we can say that this extract of this work is essentially polyphonic.
What was the purpose of the composer in this work?
The purpose of the composer was probably to use the music in a
descriptive way to represent the river as a living being. A symphony
orchestra is certainly able to symbolize the greatness of this river.

This is a type of modern popular music, a profane and dramatic vocal
piece.

Which music form is it? Indicate its main characteristics:


This work is a musical. It is based on a plot or story with different
characters. The artists are both singers and actors who are accompanied by a
band. The soloist is also accompanied by a group of dancers. There is a set too.

Instruments, instrumental ensemble (characteristics) and voices:


The band is made up of at least, electronic keyboards and synthesizers,
the drums, an electric guitar and probably an electric bass guitar. The solo voice
is a soprano singer.
