These mathematical skills are ‘displayed in their daily observations, through play and everyday activities. The concepts of numbers, shapes, sizes, mass, height, length, capacity; _ time and money are acquired at an early age, although not quite systematically. When children play with sand or water, they are learning the basic concepts of volurne and capacity. When they choose a bigger bag of sweets, instead of a smaller one, they display understanding of the relationship between size, mass and volume. Hence in teaching children how to measure, we need only to guide and facilitate their on-going daily activities of observing, estimating and comparing things. Learning Skills Series: Mathematics is written to enhance children’s basic concepts in Mathematics. This series is made up of three books, ‘one book for each level from Nursery to Kindergarten’ 2. eran eae CONTENT Numbers * Order numbers * Match numbers with corresponding number words My Neighbourhood ... © Compare length and height «© Understand the concept of ‘longer’ and ‘shorter’ * Understand the concept of ‘longest’, ‘highest’ and ‘tallest’ * Measure lengths using non-standard units My School and My Friends.. * Sort and count © Recognise and order numbers from 11 to 15 Interpret picture graphs Recognise odd and even numbers My School and Classroom ... ‘* Compare sizes, heights and capacities * Measure lengths using non-standard units * Recognise and read a centimetre ruler * Measure lengths using a centimetre ruler My Family and Home .. * Count sets of objects, * Sort and count At Home Compare sizes and capacities Estimate capacities using non-standard units Compare mass Understand the concept of ‘heaviest’ Measure mass using a simple balance Toys and Playtime © Order numbers from 1 to 20 * Sort and count objects within 15 * Recognise numbers from 16 to 20 * Read a calendar Identify dates of public holidays using a calendar 25 42 52 58 70 Draw lines to join the number words and the numbers.
