TOPIC: REDUCING POVERTY THROUGH ENTREPRENEURIAL

DEVELOPMENT

Introduction

Poverty is basically the inability to meet the basic needs of life like food, shelter,
and clothing. In Nigeria, like many countries of the world, women experience poverty
more than men. This can be attributed to the burden of rural development in the country
which constraints them from building their human capitals like education and skills.

From the inception of history, poverty has being a situation that has plied many
members of any given society, irrespective of nation, country, race, tribe, or gender.
Poverty can be defined as lack of adequate resources to meet one’s basic needs in life
like food, shelter, and clothing. It can be defined as lack of sufficient money to take care
of oneself, family, or relations. Furthermore, poverty can be seen as the inability to enjoy
the good things of life or achieve set goals.

Entrepreneurial development is defined as the structured formal conveyance of

entrepreneurship competencies which in turn refers to the concepts, skills and mental
awareness used by individuals during the process of starting and developing their growth
oriented ventures. According to Bridge (2010) entrepreneurial development should not
be confused with general business and economic studies; its goal is to promote
creativity, innovation and self-employment and also include the following elements:
developing personal ability and skills that form the basis of an entrepreneurial mind-set
and behaviour (creativity, sense of initiative, risk-taking, autonomy, self-confidence,
leadership, team spirit etc.) raising the awareness of women about self-employment and
entrepreneurship as possible career option, working on concrete enterprise projects and
activities and providing specific business skills and knowledge of how to start a business
and run it successfully (Bridge, Hegarty and Porter, 2010).
