Oil specification for HIAB products

There are many requirements on the properties of Example

the oil Examples of recommended mineral oils and their
in a hydraulic system. Among these are: temperature range are shown in diagram page 3.
- lubricating capability Examples of recommended Ester based synthetic
- resistance to oxidization hydraulic fluids and operating temperatures are

- nonfoaming properties The viscosity index (VI) for the oils are shown in
- high viscosity index, i e small viscosity change the respective tables. VI is required to determine the
when heated max permitted temperature for mineral oil.
In order to fulfill these and other requirements there Some mineral oils (extremely high VI) deviate

only affects the flash point and/or a smaller
deviation from the permitted viscosity range.

Specification Environmentally Friendly Oil

The environmentally friendly oils recommended by
Standard Hiab are Ester based synthetic hydraulic fluids

with one of the following standards or equivalents: Note! Vegetable oils do not meet Hiab’s demands
- DIN 51524 part 3 and must not be used.
- SS 15 54 34
- SS-EN ISO 6743-4 group HV Warning
Suppliers of hydraulic oil must verify that the quality Do not mix different oils. In general, a mixture
and performance meets the standards above will change oil properties, mostly for the worse.

Viscosity Change of hydraulic oil

When selecting hydraulic oils the viscosity range For oil change, the following is recommended:
should always be observed. Hydraulic oils should be - Make sure that all cylinders are retracted

exceeded at cold-start. In addition the min viscosity - Change the return filter
should not fall below 13 cSt during operation. - Fill up with new oil
Hydraulic oil should be selected so that the viscosity - Check air filter in oil tank cap.
lies between 16 och 40 cSt during normal operating
conditions. Oil temperature must be controlled to
stay below the Max permitted temperature.
Consideration should also be given to the pump
manufacturers recommendations.

Temperature
To ensure a long oil life you should observe the
following Max temperatures.
Max permitted temperature of hydraulic oil -
- mineral oil with a viscosity index (VI) < 275
70°C (158F)
- mineral oil with a viscosity index (VI) > 275
60°C (140F)
- Ester based synthetic hydraulic fluids

Factors affecting oil temperature Oxidation stability

Speed regulation in a hydraulic system causes a great Because of high temperature in the hydraulic system

The temperature rise decreases until a state of balance
is reached. High oxidation stability will prolong oil life and
HIAB cranes are as standard delivered with an oil tank reduce the quantity of sludge built up. At

problems could arise. Particularly for small cranes it is
possible to lengthen the time for oil heating by means
of exchanging the tank for a larger one.

When the oil temperature for long service periods

exceeds 70° C (158 F) the crane is to be fitted with an
oil cooler.

General
Keep the hydraulic system clean.
Store the oil in a clean place and make sure lids or
cap are closed. When filling the crane oil tank, a
clean funnel with a fine mesh strainer should be
used.

Always keep clean rags or preferably, high quality

drying paper for workshop use near at hand.
Keep funnels and strainers in a clean and dustfree
place.

Make sure that the operator is aware of the

importance of cleanliness for the hydraulic system.

Before removing hydraulic components, thoroughly

clean adjacent parts of the crane with steam or a
grease remover.
