The tense of a verb tells us the time of action. There are three types of tenses:

 Present tense – actions that happen in the present


 Past Tense – actions that have happened in the past
 Future Tense – actions that will happen in future

Let’s learn more about the Present Tense.
We use the Simple Present Tense to:
 Describe things that happen regularly.
i. He plays football every evening.
ii. I sleep early.

 State general truths or facts.


i. The sun rises in the east.
ii. Monkeys love bananas.

Note:
 With I, we, you, they and all the plural subjects, we use:
[subject+ base form of the verb]
Example: We go to play every day.
Birds fly in the sky.

 With he, she, it and all other singular subjects , we use :


[subject t + base form of the verb + s/es/ies]
Example: She sings very well.
The tortoise moves very slowly.
A. Complete these sentences with the correct present tense form of the verb in the brackets.

B. Underline the verbs in the present tenses in the following paragraph.

Frogs are animals that live in water and on land. They use their strong back legs to swim and hop. If an enemy

approaches, they can bounce away quickly.

In the day time, frogs perch on lily pads and sleep, but at night, they croak loudly.

The female frog lays eggs in still water. These eggs then hatch into tadpoles. Tadpoles, like fish, live in the water

so they need to breathe through gills. Later, the tadpoles grow lungs to help them breathe. Gradually the tadpoles

grow legs and lose their tails.


C. Fill in the blanks with verbs in simple present tense.
