WHICH CAME FIRST THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?

A detective novel deals with a mystery and or the commission of a crime, and
the aim of the story is to find the murderer. This kind of story can be
distinguished from other forms of fiction by the fact that it is like a puzzle, and
the detective is the one in charge of solving it and finding all the clues that lead
him to find out who committed the murder. At the end of the novel, he
unmasks the criminal. The narrative is usually full of logical and deductive
reasoning that helps the detective to solve it. What it is more, in this type of
story the reader is like a witness looking over the detective’s shoulder. As the story unfolds, the
readers have access to the same information as the detective. Thus making the story a kind of
game in which the reader has the chance to solve the mystery as well.
AUGUST DUPIN, the first fictional detective. The
creation of EDGAR ALLAN POE, DUPIN appeared in
three of Poe’s stories: THE MURDER IN THE RUE
MORGUE; THE MYSTERY MARIE ROGET and the
PURLOINED LETTER.
These Poe's stories strongly influenced other authors, specially ARTHUR CONNAN DOYLE,
SHERLOCK HOLMES and AGATHA CHRISTIE, HERCULES POIROT.
