Operant conditioning is based on idea that we can increase or decrease a certain behavior by adding a

consequence. For example, if a dog poops in the carpet, we can either give reinforcement for the dog to
do it again or punishment to make it stop.

Reinforcement or punishment can be either positive or negative. Which means we can do it if 4


possible options -- Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative
punishment.

Conditioning happens in 3-term contingency, known as ABCs of behavior. A Antecedent. B for


behavior. C consequence.

Take this as an example of positive reiforcement. A father keeps on giving money to his son
everytime he gets an A in the class. That makes the son keeps on striving for more As.
