It's not quite ready for the deluge of dogs and cats. But the shiny cages are in place, the outdoor pens ready for
action.

And tomorrow, Dallas officials will unveil the city's spacious new animal shelter for a first public viewing.

The long-awaited shelter, at Interstate 30 and Westmoreland Road in West Dallas, won't open to the public for
several weeks, said Willie McDaniel, division manager of Dallas Animal Services.

But he, his staff and city officials will gather there from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow for a preview day of tours,
activities and pet adoptions.

"It's like night and day," said McDaniel, comparing the $16.3 million, 52,000-square-foot center with the two
cramped and dreary shelters it will replace.

Those operations, in east Oak Cliff near the Dallas zoo and on Forney Road in Pleasant Grove, will close as the city
consolidates animal services - impoundments, redemptions and adoptions - at the six-acre site.

With almost 800 kennels for dogs and cats, the new facility will roughly double the city's current holding capacity for
strays and adoption animals.

The added space will allow the city to keep more animals beyond the minimum 72-hour holding period, in hopes of
finding owners.

have determined that Lucky needs expensive amputation surgery. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert learned about
Lucky's plight and is paying the dog's vet bills out of his own pocket.
