Gas Supply System

General Info

As for the gas supply system for the restaurant, LPG system will be used in this case since the
purpose is for commercial usage where a steady supply of gas is needed for the entire operation of
the restaurant. LPG is delivered in bigger pipes to enterprises that require a lot of gas or to power
plants that utilise it to generate electricity. Natural gas is used in bakeries to heat the ovens where
bread, pies, pastries, and cookies are baked. Natural gas is used by other firms to heat their buildings
and their water. The natural gas must first travel through a metre, which gauges how much fuel is
entering the building, in both commercial buildings and your house. The metre is read by a
representative of the gas company, who will then bill you for the quantity of natural gas you
consumed.

In the LPG System, an emergency control valve will be fitted to the inlet of the meter in this case as
from the drawing we can see that it can be easily accessed by the staff members. Other than an
emergency control valve, a meter will also be installed which is to measure and transport liquefied
petroleum gas in the liquid state by a certain amount, whether fixed permanently or mounted on a
vehicle, an LPG metre is a system, containing a mechanism or machine of the metre type. In this
restaurant we will install the meter behind and outside of the building in a purpose-made meter box.

Advantages to LPG System

Other than the advantage of a steady supply of gas with the usage of the LPG system, there are also
other benefits to using LPG system compared to the other systems whether it is towards the
environment or to the business itself. The low cost of LPG allows most sectors to reduce production
costs. Additionally, because it is less expensive than natural gas and petroleum gas, it is the fuel of
choice for industrial and commercial purposes. Because of the energy savings, this enables industries
to optimise their profits. Additionally, because the facilities are non-spillage, there is no waste of
gasoline and it is readily transported. The low cost of LPG allows most sectors to reduce production

their profits. Additionally, because the facilities are non-spillage, there is no waste of gasoline and it
is readily transported. LPG is your best choice if you require a fuel that is environmentally friendly.
For us to have a sustainable future, environmental conservation is essential. LPG has the lowest
possible levels of nitrogen, sulphur, and other particulates, which lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
By doing this, ozone layer damage that can cause global warming is decreased. Additionally, utilising
LPG reduces the need for wood for fires, enhancing the attractiveness of the surroundings. From
water pumps and generators to barbecues and heaters, LPG is utilised in a variety of equipment.
Since it is so portable, its uses are not constrained by a set source. LPG gives cooking in a busy
industrial kitchen a quick and consistent heat. In place of electric equipment, which take longer to
heat up, it is a fantastic substitute. Thus, based on these reasons, LPG system is chosen for the
restaurant.

Piping components to an LPG System

There are various piping components that will be used in the LPG system of the restaurant such as
the piping itself to transfer the gas, valves to control the flow of the gas, pressure reducing devices
which is used to regulate the flow of the gas, pressure protection devices, flanges, fittings as well as
expansion joints. The piping materials that will be used for this restaurant’s LPG system is steel as
since the amount of gas supplied amounts to a commercial usage it will not be small thus steel
piping is used to ensure that it is able to handle the pressure and amount of gas that will be used by
the restaurant. Other than that, it is also to ensure that the pipes will have a long lifetime and the
cost should overall be lowered due to the durability of steel pipes thus needing less maintenance
and repair works to be done overall which should bring an edge to the steel material when
compared to pvc material for piping.

Gas Meter

As stated in the general section which describes on the general info on the LPG system, a gas meter
will be installed in a purpose-made meter box outside and behind the building of the restaurant. As
for the reasons of this is to ensure that the meter is accessible to people from the outside. This is so
that reading on the meter can be done periodically without bothering or disturbing the operation of
the restaurant as well as to provide an ease of access during emergency situations. Other than that,
it also gives fewer opportunities for fake authorities to enter buildings and ensuring constant metre
access, preventing accounting lags and illegal use.

Other than that, a gas plug cock is also installed to ensure a means of isolation for maintenance and
emergencies and a testing point, or nipple, for determining supply pressure and system leakage is
located on the metre output.

Secondary Piping Work

The secondary piping work is to distribute the gas individually and internally to the appliances that
requires gas to operate in the kitchen and as seen in the drawing, quite several appliances need the
presence of gas to operate such as the stove. The piping material that is used in this case is a
combination of steel and rubber piping as steel is used as a main pipe to connect to the service pipe
and then the rubber pipe is used to connect and distribute individually to the appliances from the
connection to the service pipe.

Testing and purging works

Before the appliances can be allowed to operate, it is necessary to first purge the air from the
system and test for leakages to ensure no accidents or misfortunes will happen in the future which
can be a disaster.
To purge the air out we will first detect the presence of gas by turning on one burner and allowing it
to flow for a few seconds to let the gas disperse and accumulate. Then reopen one of the gas control
valves and keep the burner burning continuously until the gas is lit and the flame is steady and then
after that continue to burn each burner.

As for the testing procedure, all open ends must be sealed during new installations, and installed
appliances must be switched off at their control valves and If the metre is installed, the test point's
screw is removed and the nearby control cock is closed.

Position of piping and meter works

The blue x marks the spot where the purpose-made meter box will be put and the yellow line which
connects the meter box with the gas main inlet is the external piping steel works. The green line
indicates the steel pipes running internally to supply the gas from the main inlet and the red line
shows that the piping is sticking to the ceiling to connect to the other side of the kitchen.
