Worksheet Chapter 5 Introduction to Equations of Motion

1. An object starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 1.5 m/s2 [East] for 8.0 seconds.
What is the objects final velocity? (12 m/s, [E])
2. An object is travelling at a rate of 6.0 m/s [west] and then speeds up at a rate of 3.0
m/s2 [West] for 8.0 seconds. What is the final velocity? (30 m/s [W])
3. A car is travelling at 12.0 m/s [E]. It slows down at a rate of 2.5 m/s2 for 8.0 seconds.
What is its final velocity? (8.0 m/s, [W])
4. A bobsled that is travelling at a rate of 15.0 m/s [W] slows down uniformly to a stop in
6.0 seconds. What is the acceleration of the bobsled? (2.0 m/s2 [E])
5. A car starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 1.5 m/s2 for 6.0 seconds. How far has
the car travelled in those 6 seconds? (27 m)
6. An object is travelling at 6.0 m/s. It then slows down at a constant rate of 0.50 m/s2 for
5.0 seconds. How far does the object move in the 5.0 seconds? (24 m)
7. A train is travelling at 12.0 m/s and then slows down to a stop in 30.0 seconds. How far
does the train travel before it stops? (180 m)
8. A model car on a race track starts from rest and accelerates at a constant rate of 0.25
m/s2 for 20.0 seconds. It then travels at a constant rate for 40.0 seconds. It then slows
down uniformly to a complete stop in 10.0 seconds. How far has the car travelled?
(hint, apply the formulae separately to each section of the trip). (275 m).
