Course & Year: BSED MATH 2A
Instructor: MATTHEW C. CAÑEDA
Topic: SQUARE OF A NUMBER

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;
1. solve the square of a number.
2. defined the properties of the square of a number; and
3. manifest the value of collaboration

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Square of a Number
Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Module for Grade 8
Materials: marker, white board, bond paper & cardboard

III. PROCEDURE:
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
a. Greetings
Good morning everyone. Good morning sir;
b. Prayer
Go back to your proper seat and Vonn lead the prayer. Yes sir.
c. Checking of Attendance
If your name is called, pay attention and say
present.
Excellent. Perfect attendance.
d. Setting of Standards
Okay class, be ready and eyes on front.
e. Review
Before we go on to our next lesson, let’s go over what we Sir. (raising their hands)
talked about last time. Anyone? Our topic last meeting is
Yes, Farrah? all about Square of a Number.

Very good. Faith, what is the Square of a Number? A square number is the result when a
number has been multiplied by itself.

We need to multiply the given

number by itself to find its square
number. The square term is always
represented by a number raised to
the power of 2.

That’s good class; you paid attention during discussion and

maintained a positive attitude.
f. Motivation.

“Scramble Word”

The first to raise their hand in each row will be the ones to Okay sir.
answer the scrambled letters.

MUBERN (Row 3) NUMBER

Yes, correct it’s a NUMBER

QUARES (Row 1) SQUARE sir.

Very Good! Another one

REPTIESPOR
Correct. Last one. (Row 2) it’s PROPERTIES

ITLYPLUM

Excellent! (Row 4) MULTIPLY sir.

g. Presentation of New Lesson

Base on the activity we had. Do you have any idea of what will (Raising their hands)
be our topic today? I think our topic for today sir is all
Yes, Frexie? about Square of a Number.

You are correct Frexie.

So these our the objectives for today class.

Objective: Okay sir.

a. Defined the square of a number.
b. Find the value of the square of a number.
c. Identify the properties of the square of a number.

(Let us now proceed to the lesson proper.)

B. Lesson Proper.
a. Activity
Okay class, you need to identify the common things that
found in the picture.
b. Analysis
 What are the things in this picture? The things in this picture are square,
numbers, and circle.

 Are there things that make them different? No, because maybe in terms of
illustrating the things in order to
construct or form a word they have
different way to show it but all in all
they are all the same .

c. Abstract

A square number is the number we get after multiplying an

integer (not a fraction) by itself.

In mathematics, a square number or perfect square is an

integer, in other words, it is the product of some integer with
itself. For example, 9 is a square number, since it equals 3² and
can be written 3x3.

A square number is the result when a number has been

multiplied by itself.

We need to multiply the given number by itself to find its

square number. The square term is always represented by a
number raised to the power of 2.

Properties
The number m is a square number if and only if one can
arrange m points in a square:
The expression for the nth square number is n². This is also
equal to the sum of the first n odd numbers as can be seen in the
above picture, where a square results from the previous one by
adding an odd number of points (shown in magenta).

Examples.

1. 1² = 1x1 = 1
2. 2² = 2x2 = 4
3. 3² = 3x3 = 9
4. 4² = 4x4 = 16
5. 5² = 5x5 = 25

d. Application
Activity 1: Solve me!
Try to solve these class in your scratch paper. Answer:
1. 2²
1. 2x2 2. 7²
2. 7x7 3. 1²
3. 1x1 4. 4²
4. 4x4 5. 12²
5. 12x12 6. 5²
6. 5x5 7. 23²
7. 23x23 8. 25²
8. 25x25 9. 16²
9. 16x16 10. 9²
10. 9x9

Very Good class! You got a correct answer.

IV. Evaluation
Okay, class, it appears that you have a thorough
understanding of our topic. Please take 1/2 sheet of paper.
