Reading Comprehension Test

Name 2Bac. Arts

I am Mr. Smith and this is my story. Last night, my wife and I decided to eat out. So we went
to a small Restaurant downtown. When we went inside, the place was not crowded. The waiter who
welcomed us in was a nice smiling old lady. She was in her sixties but still lively and active. She
served the customers happily with huge smiles. My wife remarked that she was too old for that job.
Then she asked her if she was doing it for money. As she was too busy, the waiter didn’t have time for
chat, so she handed us the menu and moved away to carry on with taking orders.

When we had finished our meals, she came over to collect the plates, and asked us if we had
enjoyed the food. My wife said, “Yes, thank you, but I’m really sad for you. In your age, you must be
at home right now. You shouldn’t work as a waiter. It is an exhausting job for an old person like you”.
Then, she turned to me and said, “We must help this poor old lady. Give her a big tip”.

In her usual big smile, she came near my nosy wife and said in a low voice, “Thank you
Ma’am for your sympathy, I really appreciate your concern, but I am the boss. I’m the owner of this
restaurant and I love serving my guests personally” Then she turned to me and said in a loud voice,
“You’ll always be welcome here, sir!”
