GENRES OF FOLK LITERATURE CHARACTERISTICS


1. MYTH • Traditional stories about Gods and other
supernatural beings from specific cultures.
• Describes human occurrences, such as human
creation.
• Its main character is human or human-like.
2. LEGEND • A story regarding acts of humankind that the
narrator and the audience think occurred
throughout the history of humanity.
• Legends depict a historical hero rather than a
deity, which distinguishes them from myths.
3. FOLK TALE/LORE • This is a referring to short stories that are
verbally transmitted from one generation to the
next and include ordinary people.
• Any traditionally transmitted belief or story.
4. EPIC • The Greek term “epikos”, which means a word,
song, or speech, is where the word “epic”
derives from.
• This is something that relates to or notes a long
poetry composition.
5. FABLE • Natural elements and anthropomorphized
animals are the main characters in fables.
• A fable is a brief story intended to impart a
lesson on morality.
• Its plot often consists of a simple conflict, a
solution, and a moral.
6. FOLK SONG/BALLAD • This song was either inspired by or was written
in the style of conventional popular culture.
• The folk song involves the use of music, and
ethnic musical traditions differ widely.
• While a ballad is a type of verse, it frequently
tells a story and is accompanied by music.
7. TALL TALE • A tall tale is a story told as if it were true and
accurate yet contains unbelievable aspects.
• Stories that are hilarious and wildly exaggerated,
although realistic and culturally significant.
8. RIDDLE • These are conventional terms that question
natural occurrences and people, the living
things, with the intention of creating
associations.
• A phrase, question, or statement with two
meanings
• Has no disagreements over these words'
equivalents.
