The Battle of Angora, commonly known as the Battle of Ankara, took place on July 20, 1402,

not far from the Anatolian city of Ankara. A significant victory over the Ottoman Empire, ruled
by Bayezid I, was achieved by the Timurid Empire, headed by the ruthless conqueror Timur. The
war had far-reaching effects, causing the Ottoman Empire to fall and the Timurid Empire to rise.

The Ottoman Empire's rising dominance was one of several reasons the conflict was fought. The
Ottomans had taken over much of Anatolia under Bayezid I's rule and posed a danger to enter the
Middle East. Timur, the emperor of the Timurid Empire, was worried about the Ottomans'
growing influence and wanted to stop them from gaining too much authority.

In addition, Timur and Bayezid I's bitter personal animosity catalyzed the conflict. Timur was an
arrogant and ambitious guy who wished to add the Ottoman Empire to his list of victories after
overthrowing numerous other formidable empires. In his steadfast effort to fend off Timur,
Bayezid was just as ambitious.

Timur and Bayezid I were the major actors in the Battle of Ankara. Genghis Khan was a
competent general who ruled most Central Asia, Iran, and the Middle East. Timur was a direct
descendant of Genghis Khan. He was violent and ruthless, and his conquests were known to be
cruel. On the other side, Bayezid I was the child of Murad I, the third Ottoman sultan. He was
regarded as a capable military leader who led the Ottoman Empire to its maximum extent and
won many battles, including one in 1396 against the Byzantine Empire.

The conflict occurred on July 20, 1402, close to the Anatolian city of Ankara. Approximately
80,000 troops made up the Ottoman army, which Bayezid I commanded. On the other hand, the
Timurid army was commanded by Timur and had roughly 190,000 warriors. Timur won the
conflict handily, routing the Ottoman army and taking Bayezid I prisoner.

The Battle of Ankara significantly impacted history. For over 50 years, the Ottoman Empire
could not reclaim its former might; in contrast, the Timurid Empire, led by Shah Rukh, the
grandson of Timur, would achieve its pinnacle. The evolution of Islam was also significantly
impacted by the conflict. Timur, a Muslim himself, viewed the fight as a holy battle against the
unbelievers that cost Muslims their lives and resulted in the destruction of countless mosques.
