1. A delicate instrument of mass m is packed in a container using

a flexible material. The stiffness and damping constant of the
packing material are given as k and c, respectively and the
mass of the container is negligible. If the container is
accidentally dropped from a height h onto a rigid floor, as
shown in figure, estimate the motion of the instrument.

2. An undamped single degree of freedom of mass m and stiffness

k is subjected to a harmonic excitation f(t) = F0 sinwt at time t
= 0.
(a) Determine an expression for the steady-state response.
(b) Determine an expression for the total response.
(c) For an excitation frequency ratio η(=w/wn) = 1.5, what is
the ratio of the maximum total response to the maximum
steady-state response?
(d) What frequency range wl/wn≤w/wn≤wu/wn must be avoided,
if the steady-state response of the undamped system must be
less than, or equal to, five times the static deflection due F0.

3. A SDOF system is subjected to harmonic excitation

z(t) = Zcoswt applied at point P as shown in figure.
Given m, c, k, Z and w,
(a) Derive the equation of motion of the system with
u(t) as the unknown.
(b) Derive the equation of motion of the system with
w(t) = z-u as the unknown.
(c) Determine expressions for wn and ζ for this system.

4. An automobile, having a mass of 1000 kg, runs over a road bump of the shape shown in figure. The speed of
the automobile is 50 kmph. If the undamped natural period of vibration in the vertical direction is 1.0 s find
the response of the automobile by assuming it as a single degree of freedom undamped system vibrating in
vertical direction.

5. A building frame is modeled as an undamped single degree of freedom system. Find the lateral response of
the frame if it is subjected to a blast loading represented by the triangular pulse given by:
f (t) = F0 (1-t/t0) for 0≤t≤t0
Assume zero initial conditions. Idealize the blast load as an impulse of magnitude I = F0t0/2 and determine
the response of building frame for this impulse. Compare and comment on the two estimates of response.

6. A steel (Young's modulus E = 200 GPa) cantilever beam, carrying a weight of 0.5 N at the free end, is used
as a frequency meter. The beam has a length of 250 mm, width of 5 mm, and thickness of 1 mm. The
internal friction is equivalent to a damping ratio of 0.01. When the fixed end of the beam is sub je ted to a
harmonic displacement of vg(t) = 0.05 cos wt, the maximum tip displacement has been observed to be 65
mm. Find the forcing frequency.
