General Rules & Regulations for the Laboratory Sessions

1. Collect the Laboratory Manual at the beginning of the semester.

2. Attend the laboratory classes in time. Late comers will not be allowed to follow the practical
class.
3. It is compulsory to attend all scheduled laboratory classes. 100% attendance is compulsory to
pass the laboratory component of the course.
4. If a student cannot attend the scheduled class, due to a valid reason, permission should be
obtained by submitting a written request to the lecturer in-charge of the laboratory session.
This should be done prior to the laboratory class or in the case of illness/ tragedy within one
week of the absenteeism. All medical certificates should be certified by the Chief Medical
officer of the Health Centre, University of Peradeniya.
5. No extra classes will be allocated to students who keep away from the scheduled classes,
without valid reasons.
6. Students should complete the laboratory reports as much as possible during the laboratory class
itself and get the instructor’s signature in the specific place at the end of the laboratory class.
No report will be accepted without the instructor’s signature.
7. Each report should be submitted to the respective laboratory on or before seven working days
after the laboratory class.
8. For late submission of a report, 20% of the marks will be reduced from the laboratory report.
But under any circumstances reports will not be accepted after 10 days. In that case the
student will be considered as an absentee. However re-scheduling will be done only with the
approval of the Lecturer in-charge.
9. Each report should be submitted separately. The students are requested to bring the following
to the laboratory classes.
 Instruction sheet given in this manual for the respective practical
 Graph sheets (mm scale)
 A4 size papers
 Necessary drawing instruments
10. Students are strongly advised to read the instruction sheet, relevant reference books and
lecture notes before attending the laboratory class.
11. Students are advised to refer the notice boards of Structures and Fluid Mechanics
Laboratories frequently to collect necessary information and for their schedule.
12. The corrected reports can be collected from the Laboratory. Students are requested to keep the
corrected reports with them until the end of the semester.
GUIDANCE FOR LABORATORY REPORT WRITING
This guidance is prepared to introduce the main format of the laboratory report and to maintain same
degree of uniformity in report writing.

1. All necessary information is provided in each instruction sheet. Students are requested to read the
instruction sheets and relevant references before coming to laboratory classes.
2. All reports should have a hand written cover page (A4 sheet) with standard margins. It should
include title of the experiment (at the centre of the paper) and details of the student (at the
bottom right corner) which contain Name (letter size 5 mm), Registration Number (4 mm),
Group Number and Semester (4 mm) as shown below.

3. For each report, following sections should generally be completed during the laboratory class.
 DATE
 OBSERVATIONS
 CALCULATIONS
 TABULATION & GRAPHS
 RESULTS
4. All necessary guidance and formulae are given for the Specimen Calculation and Calculation parts.
5. Each graph should contain a Title and a Graph number. All the graphs should face the relevant
table. Do not use correction fluid (Tippex) in the graph sheets.
6. All students should get the instructor’s signature at the end of the laboratory session.
7. For the Discussion, students should answer the questions given in the instruction sheet. For the
discussion part student may attach separate sheets. It is advisable to write the discussion clearly and
shortly (normally about 100 words is sufficient). Any difficulties faced during the experimentation
process and their consequences should be included in the discussion.
8. All the books, journal articles and web sites which are referred to answer questions given in
discussion should be included under References in the standard format and may be arranged in the
alphabetical order.

provided with this manual.
