with similar IP address ranges if multiple PLCs exist.

To gain direct network access

to these networks, a network address translator (NAT) would be required.

Network Address Translation (NAT)

This device is commonly used to connect to networks using the same IP address
range. The NAT creates a proxy address so devices can be reached from outside
the LAN. This is similar to how home networks connect to the internet. The use of
NATs will require the devices to have two sets of addresses. These are:
1. Native IP and MAC address of the device
2. The Proxy Address set by the NAT which will also use the MAC of the NAT

All of these networks should be documented as part of the plan. Thus, it is

important to create a network document that will provide a view of how all your
assets are linked. Each network should list all connected devices with details such
as vendor, model, serial number, IP and MAC address. If devices are on a network
which requires a NAT, the native and proxy IP address should be included.

4.3 Plant floor assets being connected

When considering the development of a Remote Access plan, it is essential
to take a detailed look into which devices may require remote support.
Many of these devices may not be connected to any communication
network; however, it is still essential to include them. Most microprocessor
systems, at a minimum, will have some port through which to configure or
program. Many are unaware of these older legacy systems until a failure or
lock-up occurs requiring an expert to reset or reprogram them.

There is a wide variety of equipment and devices that can take advantage
of Remote Access. Below are classes of devices organized in general
categories. The categories may help organize the assets into capabilities
or general functions. For example, computers can be used in various
applications, but some maintenance functions such as version upgrades
may be the same regardless of the application.
