It is important to be able to have a connection to several

devices at one time when troubleshooting.

Problems are not normally isolated to a single device. In many cases it,
is an issue that requires monitoring several devices to be able to know
where the problem is. Example of multiple devices in a system: Resolving
a fault in a controller and confirming another device it communicates with
is now functioning.

When multiple devices talk to each other, it is often required to confirm/

validate communications. This way, you can determine if communication
is the root cause of the issue. Also, fault finding and making changes
require access to SCADA or HMI computers connected to controllers and
should be looked at simultaneously as they operate as a system.

System integrator comment: We have a separate line PLC, equipment

process PLC (per equipment) and safety PLC (per equipment). Depending
on the issue, one may have to connect to multiple PLCs. Additionally, we
may need to connect to quality devices (e.g. cameras).

4.4 Methodologies to engage beyond one-to-one

Troubleshooting automation systems is more complex than looking

into one device. Various scenarios need to be taken into consideration.
When developing a plan, it is best to review them and the multiple
individuals required to assist. The following section will go over some
of these different cases but by no means are they the only cases you
could encounter. The following cases are examples of different types of
troubleshooting or diagnostics involving the interaction of several devices.

One of the most common is the interaction of several devices in a control

system connected to an HMI or SCADA system. Depending on the type of
