It would be necessary for the LANs with unique IP Address ranges or virtual

LANs (VLANs) to organize all devices by LAN or VLAN. This would allow
discovery tools that can be used on a LAN to scan and identify all local
devices on this network. Organizing on the LAN or VLAN level will also
clarify what other devices are in that broadcast domain.

Best Practice: Create an organized approach in listing all the

devices that are on the plant floor
Organizations in companies may have different methods of naming
devices. It is best to create a spreadsheet format that allows individuals
in IT, OT, and maintenance to be able to search and identify the device
with appropriate details.

Connecting to the asset

When questioned about the methods of connecting to assets on the plant
floor, respondents overwhelming answered that Ethernet was the most used
network to do so. Other networks were used to make the final connection
to the device, such as an RS232 connection or a fieldbus connection. These
networks would require an intermediary device to bridge to Ethernet or
connect to a computer or PLC device that will communicate to these devices.

As the digital transformation of industry progresses, the sensors and

actuators will directly connect to Ethernet, whether in a wired or wireless
network. This will mean that you should consider that there will be an
evolution in connection, which should be accounted for in your plan.
