6 OT taking a prime position for plant floor networks

The OT organization must take the lead or active role when addressing
manufacturing networks. As Ethernet becomes the core technology
replacing traditional fieldbus networks such as DeviceNet, Profibus, and
others, this provides the necessary infrastructure for developing a Remote
Access platform. The architecture and use of the Ethernet Networks have
many subtle differences.

Network infrastructure on the plant floor is different from traditional office

or enterprise networks. Individuals and equipment using these networks are
also very different. While IT most often will be involved, it should be more of
a supportive role, as indicated in the chart below.

When asked how involved IT should be with remote access to equipment
on manufacturing networks, members said they believe IT should have
a role in assisting, but it is very important for OT to lead the project and
provide guidance to IT.

Best Practice: Take an active role and work with IT on the

manufacturing networks

OT must strive to fully understand the plant’s IT requirements and

policies. Once understood, the OT team should assess the impact of
technologies and applications in view of these IT requirements and
policies, and support the IT team’s endeavor to assure compliance
with its policies, procedures, and standards.
