Thane, India’s most populous district has been split. The Maharashtra
Government on Friday decided to carve Palghar out of the district.

Palghar will be the headquarters of the new district, which will have
eight taluks (sub-districts). The residual Thane district will have seven
taluks including Thane city.

Palghar, Vasai, Mokhada, Talasari, Jawahar, Wada, Dahanu and

Vikramgad will now form part of Palghar district. While Thane, Kalyan,
Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Murbad, Ambernath and Shahapur will continue
to be part of Thane district.

Thane district, with a large tribal population, huge tracts of forest and
inaccessible areas has always been challenge for the administrators. The
tribal belt will now come under Palghar.

Chief Executive Officer of Thane Zilla Parishad, Shekhar Gaikwad told

Business Line that the new district will help the tribal population get
better and faster access to government services.

“Today for getting a caste certificate, tribal persons have to travel three
and half hours and spend about ₹200 to reach the district headquarters.
With formation of Palghar, the distance and travel expenses will reduce
considerably,” he said.

Gaikwad said that Palghar, with a new District Collector, will be more
accessible to the people. It will help in keeping a close watch on field
development. Today, due to the expanse of the district, State Government
officers have to travel long distances to reach services to the local
population.

The State Government has earmarked funds for tribal development and
with the formation of Palghar, utilisation of funds will be better, he said.

Palghar will get 56 new State Government offices. About ₹466 crore has
been earmarked for various administrative expenses.
