ECA – Troubleshooting with SDP3

Changes Background
The following changes have been made in this ECA units that are not defective have repeatedly

no faults with these separate ECA units have

• A paragraph has been added on page 5. cause it may have affected the vehicle function
or prompted fault messages in the ICL. In other
cases, the ECA unit has been renewed incorrect-
ly because of its complicated history, but also
because it is relatively quick and easy to do so.

In many of the cases specified above, the cus-

tomer and workshop have found that renewing
the ECA unit solved the problem.

For Scania to be able to solve quality problems,

the problem must be clear during inspection. It
is important that the workshop troubleshoots ve-
hicles and ECA units systematically before
units are renewed. As much information as pos-
sible should then be sent to Scania.

With this TI, Scania wants to facilitate and im-

prove troubleshooting of the ECA unit, and to
provide a link between different fault codes and
quality problems that have been found in the
past.

If an incorrect piston stroke is found, check the
following:

• Check the fluid level in the ECA reservoir.

• Check for fluid leakage on ECA. Types of fault which do not re-
quire the ECA unit to be renewed

Clutch vibrations

After renewal of ECA unit If the problem is with clutch vibrations, renew
the parts in accordance with TI 04-15 04 27.
It is important that the following calibrations
are performed in SDP3 after the ECA has been

• Clutch adjustment.
Carry out an in-depth analysis of the gearbox.
• Setting of total clutch disc thickness. For example, check the synchromesh, planetary
gear or the teeth.

Troubleshooting
Read any active or inactive fault codes using
SDP3. Save the vehicle information before any
fault codes are deleted.

Fault code 50000 – Fault type 2

Cause
Poorly inserted contact (A). Fault codes 50100
and 50110 may also be generated for this fault.

Action

Pull out the contact (A).

Press the insert out 0.5-0.7 mm using a screw-

driver for example. See illustration.

Press the contact in again.

Check if the fault code is still active.

When renewing the ECA unit, the pins,

1 898 960, on the cable harness to contact (A)
should be renewed as they may be corroded.

Fault code 50140

Cause

A warning to the driver that the clutch is cur-

rently wearing a lot.

Action

None. This is a common fault code which is

generated on most vehicles at some time. It is
not a fault with the ECA unit. If the fault code
is generated when you are experiencing clutch
slippage, make sure that the latest OPC soft-
ware has been installed in accordance with TI
05-16 02 10.
