Laboratory One: Synchronous Generators
Automatic control of the generator voltage and frequency with no load.
Measurement of the generation parameters

Objective
The objective of this practical exercise is to understand the automatic voltage and
frequency control of the motor-generator group fulfilled by the controller and without
loads. Students will take experience in the manual and automatic operation of the turbine
speed and current excitation of the generator. Manual control potentiometers will allow
the user carry out manual control speed and current excitation of the machines.
Students will also able to check the generation parameters through the different
measuring instruments included in the application.

Required elements
 Industrial Power Supply/AC 3PH Variable Supply Power (N-ALI01/N-VPS01)
 Control and Protection of Turbine-Generator Group Module 1 (N-PPCM1)
 Power Generation Substation Module 2 (N-PSUB2)
 1kW/1P Three-Phase Synchronous Generator (EMT6/1K)
 AC Servomotor 1 (SERV01)
 Network Analyzer Unit with Computer Data Acquisition (N-EALD) (1 unit)

Procedure
1. Power supply

1.1. Before carrying out any practical exercise, verify that all the power hoses
and switches are disconnected and switched off.
1.2. Check the laboratory voltage before connecting any equipment. This should
be: 380 VAC + N + GND (3PH).
1.3. Before changing the configuration of any wiring, it will be necessary to switch
off the main supply by pressing the module’s emergency mushroom (N-
ALI01 or N-VPS01). You can also cut the current off by turning the key of the
module for the main power supply until reaching the position OFF ( N-ALI01)
or by turning the power switch to OFF position ( N-VPS01) . This method will
be only used by the instructor, and he or she will keep the mentioned key
when the unit is not being used in order to avoid an irresponsible use of it.
Check that the automatic magneto-thermal differential switch placed on the
main power supply module is ON for the power supply of the module to be
active.
1.4. If the N-VPS01 is acquired it is advisable to use the AC fixed output for the
power supply of the modules and the variable one for the power circuit.
1.5. For all practical exercises, you must connect the GND’s of all modules as it
is shown in the wiring models.
1.6. If, for the development of a practical exercise, it is necessary to use modules
assembled in different racks, it will be also necessary to connect the grounds

2. Connections
Carry out the connections for the generation group and the main power supply, as shown
in the cable assembly sections ‘’Servomotor-Generator group connections’’ and ‘’Main
power supply connections’’.
3. Wiring
Carry out the wiring shown in the cable assembly section ‘’Measuring elements wiring’’.
4. Starting up the application
Follow the steps below in order to activate the protections and start up the application:
4.1 Verify the power supply (N-ALI01 or N-VPS01) magneto-thermal circuit
breaker is at its down position, which means it does not allow the current to
flow.
4.2 Verify the N-PSUB2 magneto-thermal circuit breaker is at its down position
as well.
4.3 Adjust the N- PSUB2 control potentiometers to the minimum values allowed
and the switches as shown in the section 7.3.4.1, ‘’Initial position of the
switches’’.
4.4 Turn off the selector switches of the N-REFT/3C, N-INDT/3C and N-
CAR19T/3C modules to disconnect all loads if these modules are going to
be used in the practical exercise.
4.5 Carry out the power supply wiring for all the modules to be used in the
practical exercise as shown in the cable assembly section “Modules power
supply wiring”.
4.6 Pull up both magneto-thermal circuit breakers in the power supply and the
N-PSUB2 modules.
4.7 Turn to ON state the power supply through the removable key (N-ALI01) or
the corresponding power switch (N-VPS01).
4.8 Turn on all the modules which have power switches.

5. Set the N-PSUB2 switches for the generator start up and its automatic control
as shown for Stand-alone operation.

6. Varifying values
Verify that the pre-established conditions (380-415V and 50Hz) are automatically
reached; consequently the automatic speed and voltage controller closes the 52 G circuit
breaker and its indicator turns on. For this purpose, go to the corresponding screen of the
controller as shown in the N-PPCM1 Operation section ‘’ Main window: Electrical
parameters and switches status’’
7. Check the measured voltage and frequency by selecting the corresponding
screens in the network analyzer.
8. An automatic to manual control transfer can be fulfilled. Change the position of the
relevant ‘manual/automatic speed control’ and ‘manual automatic excitation control’
switches and manually control the motor-generator group. Please, pay attention in the
initial position of both speed and excitation potentiometers. If the position is too clockwise,
the excitation current when going into manual mode will be very high and the machine
may be damaged. The same can happen with the speed control potentiometer. The
machine can be packed too much.

9. Shutting down the application

9.1 Stop the turbine by means of the switch (start/stop turbine) of the N-PSUB2 module
or, from SCADA, performing the same operation with the virtual switch.
9.2 Wait until the turbine stops and, if the application was in remote control mode
(SCADA), stop the SCADA and close the software (QUIT).
9.3 Turn off the N-PSUB2 module through its power switch.
9.4 Turn off the N-VPS01 module or the N-ALI01, through its power switch or
removable key respectively.

10. Conclusion/Activity
Write not more than 4 page explanation about what you observed concerning the
following:
I. Voltage generated
II. Current generated
III. The frequency generated
IV. Prime mover
V. SCADA/local control mode
VI. Automatic/manual speed control
VII. Automatic/manual excitation control
