EXPERIMENT – 2
TO STUDY THE OPERATION OF CONTROLLED RECTIFIER FED SEPARATELY
EXCITED DC MOTOR DRIVE

(Part A)
AIM: To study the operation of controlled rectifier fed separately excited dc motor drive operating in
open loop control mode through experimental studies.

APPARATUS:

S. No SOFTWARE USED DESKTOP QUANTITY

1 SEDC motors drive trainer 01
kit
2 Oscilloscope 01
3 DC voltmeter, 01
4 Ammeter/Clamp meter. 01

BLOCK DIAGRAM:

Precautions:
1. All the connections are to be made with the main supply MCB in OFF condition.
2. Do not short load terminals.
3. Don’t short supply terminals “P” and “N”.
4. Before switching ON the supply ensures that the fuse is in good condition.
5. First check all control signals on oscilloscope. If signals are not coming properly, then
don’t give 230 V AC single phase supply to “P” and “N” terminals of module.
General Procedure for Practical:
1. Before making connection make sure that control supply switch and MCB are OFF.
2. Connect the kit to the single phase 230V AC supply through power code.
3. Connect single phase 230V AC supply between ‘P’ and ‘N’ on the kit.
4. Switch ON the control circuit supply and study the various waveforms of control circuit
on oscilloscope.
5. Connect the armature terminals of SEDC motor at the ‘A1’, ‘A2’ terminal and field
terminals across ‘F1’,’F2’ terminal on the trainer kit. Switch on the MCB.
6. Press left arrow key to select mode of operation (Closed loop / Open loop). Press enter to
select mode.
7. Use ‘UP’ and ‘DOWN’ arrow key to set required speed.
8. Press the START/STOP key to start the motor.
9. To change motor speed, stop motor and repeat from step 6.

PROCEDURE:
1. Follow the general practical procedure as given in section 3.5
2. Connect 230 V, 50 Hz signal at the ‘P’ and ‘N’ terminal of the trainer kit.
3. Connect field winding across ‘F1’ and ‘F2’ terminals and armature across ‘A1’ and ‘A2’
terminals of the motor. Connect DC ammeter in serried for measuring field and armature
current of the motor.
4. Press START/STOP key to start the drive.
5. Select the open loop mode using the MODE SEL. key.
6. To increase or decrease the speed of the motor use PARA SEL. key and press the EDIT
key to enter the new motor speed.
7. Calculate the output Voltage V0, output current I0, motor speed N and hence tabulate the
results.
