1.0 SCOPE

This SEC Transmission Standard Specification (TMSS) specifies the minimum technical
requirements for design, engineering, manufacture, inspection, testing and performance of
HVAC Pumps for Hydronic Piping Systems intended to be used in the system of Saudi
Electricity Company, (SEC).

2.0 CROSS REFERENCES

This Material Standard Specification shall be read in conjunction with the latest revision of SEC
General Specification No. 01-TMSS-01, titled "General Requirements for All
Equipment/Materials" which shall be considered as an integral part of this TMSS.

This TMSS shall also be read in conjunction with SEC Purchase Order or Contract Schedules
for project, as applicable.

3.0 APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS

The latest revision/amendments of the following Codes and Standards shall be applicable for
the equipment/material covered in this TMSS. In case of conflict, the vendor/manufacturer may
propose equipment/material conforming to one group of Industry Codes and Standards quoted
hereunder without jeopardizing the requirements of this TMSS.

4.0 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

4.1 General Requirements

4.1.1 Design and Manufacture: HVAC pump shall be of manufacturer's standard


designed and manufactured unit consisting of centrifugal pump and electric
motor drive including all necessary accessories for a complete and fully
operational unit. It shall also be designed to allow the removal of the rotating
elements for inspection and service without disturbing the system piping.

4.1.2 Rated Operating Conditions

a. Unless otherwise specified, all pumps shall be rated for minimum of


12.07 bars (175 psi) working pressure.

b. At specified system fluid temperature, the pump shall be non-overloading


and shall operate without vapor binding and cavitation.

c. All pumps shall be specifically designed for continuous service and can
be operated either by constant-speed or variable-speed drivers.

4.1.3 Pump Rotations

a. Pumps shall be selected either right-hand (clockwise, CW) rotation or


left-hand (counterclockwise, CCW) rotation depending on the design
requirement.

i. Horizontal Pump Shaft Rotation

The rotation of a horizontal pump can be determined by standing


at the driver end and facing the pump. If the top of the shaft
revolves from left to right or from right to left, the rotations is
CW or CCW respectively.

ii. Vertical Pump Shaft Rotation

The rotation of vertical pump can be determined by looking down


upon the top of the pump. If the point of the shaft directly
opposite revolves from left to right or revolves from right to left,
the rotation is CW or CCW respectively.

4.1.4 Pump Speed

All pumps shall be selected at rated speed of 1750 rpm.

4.1.5 Miscellaneous

a. All units shall be tested for hydronic heating and cooling application and
shall operate satisfactorily at ambient condition as high as 50°C for
outdoor installation.

b. Provision shall be made on each pumping unit for two (2) numbers
connections to grounding grid.

c. Unit capacity and electrical characteristics shall be provided in Section


7.0 - Data Schedule, to demonstrate that all components of the pump will
satisfy the design requirements.

4.2 Ratings

4.2.1 Head-Capacity Rating

The total head of the pump developed at rated capacity and speed shall equal or
exceed the required total system head.

4.2.2 Power Rating

The maximum pump brake kilowatt (horsepower) shall not exceed the power
rating of its driver, including service factor.

4.2.3 All published ratings for pumps shall be verified by tests in accordance with
Hydraulic Institute Standards.

4.3 Manufacture

4.3.1 Pumps

The pump shall be either of the split-case type or end-suction or in-line


centrifugal pump. It shall be used in application where the pump suction
condition is capable of maintaining a minimum required net positive suction
head (NPSH) of 1.0 meter with the pump operating at rated capacity.

a. Split-Case Pumps

The horizontally or vertically split-case pump shall be of the single stage,


double suction centrifugal pump complete with flexible coupling and
guard, and directly connected to the motor. Pump and motor shall be
either horizontal or vertical base-mounted on a common base plate of
heavy structural steel design and securely welded cross members and
open grouting area. Shaft bearings shall be removable without
disassembling the pump.

b. End-suction Pumps

The end-suction pump shall either be of close-coupled type or base


mounted, single stage, vertically-split design with a foot-mounted casing
to allow removal of the bearing assembly without relocating the motor.

c. In-Line Pumps

The in-line pumps shall be of close-coupled single stage designed for


installation in vertical or horizontal position. Unless otherwise specified,
the pump shall be provided with cast iron pedestal mounting support.

4.3.2 Electric Motor Drives

a. All motors shall be manufactured for hydronic application and shall drive
its maximum normal load without introducing any risk of fire, electric
shock or injury to any person.

b. For indoor and outdoor installations, all motors shall have an open drip
proof (ODP) and totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) respectively NEMA
MG-1 enclosure and shall be marked as complying with NEMA
specifications. All motors shall be rated for continuous duty and shall
not be used at voltages exceeding 110% of the rated voltage.

The motor nameplate rating shall not be exceeded at any operating


conditions (except as allowed by the service factor on the motor
nameplate) of the pump, i.e. the pump shall have a non-overloading
power characteristics.

c. The motor winding shall resist the absorption of moisture and shall have
maximum service factor of 1.15.

d. The electrical rating of the motor drives for pumps shall be in accordance
with the following table:

e. The terminal box of the motor shall be provided with a grounding


terminal in accordance with NFPA 70.

f. The motor shall incorporate thermal or overcurrent protection against


running overload and stalled-rotor conditions per UL 778 and NFPA70.

g. The motor shall have heavy-duty grease lubricated ball bearings,


completely adequate for maximum load for which the motor is designed.

4.4 Pump Accessories

4.4.1 Coupling and Guard

a. Coupling

When employed between pump and motor, coupling shall be of flexible,


center drop-out, spacer type coupler capable of absorbing torsional
vibration.

b. Coupling Bolting

Shall be held within such mass and dimensional tolerances as to permit


both interchange within the same set of bolts per coupling hub and
substitution of spare bolts without affecting the coupling balance.

c. Coupling Guard

Where pump design permits, coupling guards shall be of all metal


enclosed type. The enclosure shall be of sufficient size to permit
adequate heat dissipation to prevent overheating. Coupling guards shall
be securely fastened to the base and to permit easy inspection and
maintenance of flexible element.

4.4.2 Base plates

a. Base plate shall be channel steel with fully opened grouting area,
sufficiently rigid to support the pump and motor. It shall be fabricated
with full depth cross-members under all unit feet. All external welds in
base plate shall be continuous.

b. The vendor shall be responsible for the proper design of the pumping unit
and for the elimination of any unacceptable vibration in the base plate.

4.4.3 Suction Diffusers

a. Diffusers shall be an angle pattern flow straightening fitting equipped


with a combination diffuser-strainer-orifice cylinder, flow straightening
vanes, start-up strainer (16 mesh bronze) and adjustable support foot.

b. Diffusers shall be designed to withstand pressure differential equal to the


system pump shutoff head and shall have a free area equal to five times
the cross section area of the pump suction opening. The length of the
flow-straightening vane shall be no less than 2-1/2 times the diameter of
the system pump suction connection.

4.5 Materials

4.6 Fabrication

4.6.1 General

a. Casting shall be smooth and free from scale, lumps, cracks, blisters, sand
holes and defects of any nature that may affect the intended use. A
casting shall not be plugged or filled, but may be impregnated to remove
porosity.

b. Bolts and caps screws used to assemble parts subject to stress due to
water pressure shall not be less than 10mm in diameter.

c. The maximum stress on any bolt of a pressure retaining casting shall not
exceed 25% of the elastic limit of the material as computed by using the
stress area. The stress area is defined by the following equation:

4.6.2 Stationary Elements

a. Pump Casing

i. Casing shall be high quality cast iron (ductile iron, ASTM A356
for working pressure above 175 psig) and shall be provided with
tapped and plugged holes for priming, vent, drain and gauge
connections.

ii. The pump casing shall be of split-case volute design with


mounting feet cast integral with the lower casing for support,
capable of being serviced without disturbing suction and
discharge piping. The casing shall include means such as tapped
holes for jackscrews, to facilitate disassembly of the casing and
the stuffing box cover (if provided) without requiring the use of
wedge or prying elements.

iii. Pump Nozzles

The suction and discharge nozzles shall have flanges drilled,


faced and dimensioned in accordance with ANSI Standard B16.1
Class 125 or companion flanges per manufacturer's standards.

b. Bearings

i. Bearings shall be grease lubricated steel having an L-10 rating of


not less than 5,000 hours at maximum load (maximum hydraulic
load on the largest impeller operated at any point on its rated
speed curve) in accordance with the ANSI/AFBMA 9

ii. The L-10 rating in hours referenced in item (i) above is to be


calculated from L-10 rating in revolutions based on the following
equation:

iii. If the pump utilizes the shaft bearing of the driver to carry axial
load and radial forces of the impellers, compliance with the
requirements of items (i) and (ii) above shall be verified by a
review of the bearing life calculations based on the maximum
loads applied by the pump.

The inboard or coupling end bearing shall be single row ball


bearing. The outboard bearing shall be selected to carry radial
and thrust load and be secured with a lock nut to prevent
migration.

iv. Two (2) bearing assemblies shall be provided for base mounted
end suction pump; one that is free to float within the frame to
carry radial forces and the other to carry both radial and axial
thrust.

v. Means such as water slingers and dust caps shall be provided to


limit the entrance of water and foreign matter to the bearings.

c. Bearing Housings

Housing shall be bolted to the end of the lower half casing and shall
secure positive alignment of the rotating element. The housing shall
provide a fit for the inboard bearing that allows freedom for thermal
expansion while the outboard bearing shall be clamped in place to take
all thrust loads and keep the rotating element in its proper axial locations.

d. Stuffing Box Housing and Bearing Brackets: Shall be made of cast iron
separate from the casing and mounted in cylindrical fits in the end of the
casing.

4.6.2 Rotating Elements

All rotating elements shall be statically and dynamically balanced.

a. Impellers and other Internal Components

i. The impellers shall be of the closed type i.e. they are incorporate
shrouds or side walls that completely enclose the impeller
waterways from the suction eye to the periphery.

ii. Underfilling, overfilling and V-cutting of impeller vanes to meet


rated performance is not allowed unless approved in advance in
writing by SEC. If approved, the vendor shall submit a drawing
showing the details of such impeller outlet dressing. This drawing
shall also be included in the O&M Manual.

iii. The impellers shall be secured in an axial direction permitting no


contact with the casing under operating conditions.

iv. Impellers, impeller rings, casing wearing rings, stuffing-box


bottoms, interior nuts lining of stuffing box throats, nuts and drain
plugs shall be of corrosion-resistant materials.

v. The radial clearance between a stationary and rotating part of a


pump shall be per manufacturer's standard..

b. Shafts

Shall be of stainless steel or hardened steel with corrosion-resistant shaft


sleeves of ample size to operate under load with a minimum of
deflection.

c. Mechanical Seals

i. Mechanical seals shall be mounted directly on the shaft and


located so that seal lubrication liquid is directed immediately over
the seal faces. Arrangement shall assure that seal leakage cannot
enter the bearing housing. Seals shall be suitable for conditions
stated.

ii. Piping shall be supplied to provide seal lubrication and shall be


mounted on the upper half of the casing (for horizontal split case
pumps). Sealing from an external source shall be possible for
lubrication and/or cooling.

iii. Seals shall be suitable for continuous operation at 107°C (225°F).

4.7 Product Marking

4.7.1 Nameplates

Pumps and drivers manufactured in accordance with this standard shall be


identified ( in English and/or Arabic) by a nameplate, made of stainless steel,
suitably secured to each unit indicating the following information:

4.8 Directional Arrow

A directional arrow shall be marked on each pump casing to indicate pump rotation.

4.9 Instruction Manual

A fully illustrated Instruction Manual in English shall be delivered with each pump,
including the following information:

4.9.2 A simplified description of the method of installation and O&M procedures.

5.0 MOUNTING

5.1 Mounting and Alignment

Pumps and drivers shall be mounted and aligned in accordance with the latest edition of
the Hydraulic Institute Standards for Centrifugal, Rotary and Reciprocating Pumps.

5.2 Installation

The pumps shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of Hydraulic Institute
Standards and/or the manufacturer's recommended instructions.

5.3 Vibration Level

Vibration level for the pumps at rated speed shall not exceed 0.62 mil (0.0157mm)
peak-to-peak. The procedure for measurements shall be in accordance with ANSI S2.17.

6.0 TESTING

6.1 Shop Testing:

All pumps shall be factory-tested in accordance with the applicable performance tests as
prescribed in Hydraulic Institute Standards.

6.1.1 Performance Tests

a. Each pump shall be factory-tested to provide detailed performance


characteristics and to demonstrate its compliance with the specifications.

b. Each pump shall be subjected to an operational test for five (5) operating
conditions i.e. (1) shut-off, (2) minimum continuous stable capacity, (3)
midway between minimum continuous stable capacity and rated capacity,
(4) rated capacity, and (5) 120% of rated capacity. The resulting
performance curve showing pump efficiency, flow rates, developed
heads and power input shall be in accordance with the pump rating.

c. The operational test shall be conducted with a positive suction pressure to


achieve the maximum brake power output required by the pump.

d. On completion of the required tests, a certified pump curves showing


performance characteristics such as head, capacity, efficiency, brake
power, and NPSHR, etc. shall be provided.

6.1.2 Hydrostatic Tests

Each pump shall withstand a hydrostatic pressure test of no less than 1.50
times the pump rated head, but in no case less than 17.23 bars (250 psi). Test
shall be performed for a period of no less than five (5) minutes and during such
test, no objectionable leakage shall occur at any joint.

6.2 Field Testing

Field testing, to be witnessed by SEC Representative, shall be carried out by an


independent and reputable testing company for verification and proper performance of
the pumping unit. Field test reports shall be submitted to SEC for review and
acceptance.
