requirements for design, engineering, manufacture, inspection, testing and performance of
HVAC Pumps for Hydronic Piping Systems intended to be used in the system of Saudi
Electricity Company, (SEC).
This Material Standard Specification shall be read in conjunction with the latest revision of SEC
General Specification No. 01-TMSS-01, titled "General Requirements for All
Equipment/Materials" which shall be considered as an integral part of this TMSS.
This TMSS shall also be read in conjunction with SEC Purchase Order or Contract Schedules
for project, as applicable.
The latest revision/amendments of the following Codes and Standards shall be applicable for
the equipment/material covered in this TMSS. In case of conflict, the vendor/manufacturer may
propose equipment/material conforming to one group of Industry Codes and Standards quoted
hereunder without jeopardizing the requirements of this TMSS.
3.1 AFBMA 9 Load Ratings and Fatigue Life for Ball Bearings
3.2 ANSI B16.1 Cast Iron Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings
3.9 ASTM A269 Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General
Services
3.10 ASTM A276 Stainless and Heat-Resisting Steel Bars and Shapes
3.11 ASTM A356 Steel Castings, Carbon, Low Alloy, and Stainless Steel, Heavy- Walled
for Steam Turbines
3.12 ASTM B16 Free Cutting Brass, Rod, Bar and Shapes
3.13 ASTM B111 Copper and Copper-Alloy Seamless Condenser Tubes and Ferrule Stock
3.14 ASTM B584 Copper Alloy Sand Castings for General Applications
c. All pumps shall be specifically designed for continuous service and can
be operated either by constant-speed or variable-speed drivers.
4.1.5 Miscellaneous
a. All units shall be tested for hydronic heating and cooling application and
shall operate satisfactorily at ambient condition as high as 50°C for
outdoor installation.
b. Provision shall be made on each pumping unit for two (2) numbers
connections to grounding grid.
4.2 Ratings
The total head of the pump developed at rated capacity and speed shall equal or
exceed the required total system head.
The maximum pump brake kilowatt (horsepower) shall not exceed the power
rating of its driver, including service factor.
4.2.3 All published ratings for pumps shall be verified by tests in accordance with
Hydraulic Institute Standards.
4.3 Manufacture
4.3.1 Pumps
a. Split-Case Pumps
b. End-suction Pumps
c. In-Line Pumps
a. All motors shall be manufactured for hydronic application and shall drive
its maximum normal load without introducing any risk of fire, electric
shock or injury to any person.
b. For indoor and outdoor installations, all motors shall have an open drip
proof (ODP) and totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) respectively NEMA
MG-1 enclosure and shall be marked as complying with NEMA
specifications. All motors shall be rated for continuous duty and shall
not be used at voltages exceeding 110% of the rated voltage.
c. The motor winding shall resist the absorption of moisture and shall have
maximum service factor of 1.15.
d. The electrical rating of the motor drives for pumps shall be in accordance
with the following table:
220/127 220 3 60
380/220 380 3 60
a. Coupling
b. Coupling Bolting
c. Coupling Guard
a. Base plate shall be channel steel with fully opened grouting area,
sufficiently rigid to support the pump and motor. It shall be fabricated
with full depth cross-members under all unit feet. All external welds in
base plate shall be continuous.
b. The vendor shall be responsible for the proper design of the pumping unit
and for the elimination of any unacceptable vibration in the base plate.
4.5 Materials
Materials of superior quality shall be used in fabrication of the following major pump
components:
4.6 Fabrication
4.6.1 General
a. Casting shall be smooth and free from scale, lumps, cracks, blisters, sand
holes and defects of any nature that may affect the intended use. A
casting shall not be plugged or filled, but may be impregnated to remove
porosity.
b. Bolts and caps screws used to assemble parts subject to stress due to
water pressure shall not be less than 10mm in diameter.
c. The maximum stress on any bolt of a pressure retaining casting shall not
exceed 25% of the elastic limit of the material as computed by using the
stress area. The stress area is defined by the following equation:
a. Pump Casing
i. Casing shall be high quality cast iron (ductile iron, ASTM A356
for working pressure above 175 psig) and shall be provided with
tapped and plugged holes for priming, vent, drain and gauge
connections.
b. Bearings
iii. If the pump utilizes the shaft bearing of the driver to carry axial
load and radial forces of the impellers, compliance with the
requirements of items (i) and (ii) above shall be verified by a
review of the bearing life calculations based on the maximum
loads applied by the pump.
iv. Two (2) bearing assemblies shall be provided for base mounted
end suction pump; one that is free to float within the frame to
carry radial forces and the other to carry both radial and axial
thrust.
c. Bearing Housings
Housing shall be bolted to the end of the lower half casing and shall
secure positive alignment of the rotating element. The housing shall
provide a fit for the inboard bearing that allows freedom for thermal
expansion while the outboard bearing shall be clamped in place to take
all thrust loads and keep the rotating element in its proper axial locations.
d. Stuffing Box Housing and Bearing Brackets: Shall be made of cast iron
separate from the casing and mounted in cylindrical fits in the end of the
casing.
i. The impellers shall be of the closed type i.e. they are incorporate
shrouds or side walls that completely enclose the impeller
waterways from the suction eye to the periphery.
b. Shafts
c. Mechanical Seals

A directional arrow shall be marked on each pump casing to indicate pump rotation.
A fully illustrated Instruction Manual in English shall be delivered with each pump,
including the following information:
5.0 MOUNTING
Pumps and drivers shall be mounted and aligned in accordance with the latest edition of
the Hydraulic Institute Standards for Centrifugal, Rotary and Reciprocating Pumps.
5.2 Installation
The pumps shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of Hydraulic Institute
Standards and/or the manufacturer's recommended instructions.
Vibration level for the pumps at rated speed shall not exceed 0.62 mil (0.0157mm)
peak-to-peak. The procedure for measurements shall be in accordance with ANSI S2.17.
6.0 TESTING
All pumps shall be factory-tested in accordance with the applicable performance tests as
prescribed in Hydraulic Institute Standards.
b. Each pump shall be subjected to an operational test for five (5) operating
conditions i.e. (1) shut-off, (2) minimum continuous stable capacity, (3)
midway between minimum continuous stable capacity and rated capacity,
(4) rated capacity, and (5) 120% of rated capacity. The resulting
performance curve showing pump efficiency, flow rates, developed
heads and power input shall be in accordance with the pump rating.
Each pump shall withstand a hydrostatic pressure test of no less than 1.50
times the pump rated head, but in no case less than 17.23 bars (250 psi). Test
shall be performed for a period of no less than five (5) minutes and during such
test, no objectionable leakage shall occur at any joint.
