Itinerary

Introduction

6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb the Marangu Route is the best choice as the Marangu route is used by
almost 50% of all climbers and has comfortable mountain huts with solar power lighting. Although
the trail is crowded, the views are beautiful and each day of walking progresses through a different
climate zone, adding considerably to the interest of the trek.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) To Mandara Hut 2700m

Airport,

Start Point
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

You shall drive from your hotel in Arusha to Marangu Gate which is almost 50kms. where you shall
finish all your registration formalities, and making the final reparations for the climb from the Gate,
you ascend a cleared ridge trail to Mandara Hut passing through rain forest where you can see
vervet monkeys, birds like the turraco, trees like Macaranga Kilimandscharica, flowers like yellow
impatiens kilimajari, violet impatiens pseudoviola and the sweet-scented white Begonia meyeri-
johannis. You shall have your overnight at Mandara Hut in A shape wooden huts.

Day 2: Mandara Hut 2700m To Horombo Hut 3720m

From the Mandara Huts, the trail passes through a short stretch of forest and skirts the base of
Maundi Crater, crosses a meadow and a wooded stream, then emerges into grassland. It is well
worth the short detour to scramble up to the rim of Maundi Crater for a superb view of the
mountain and its surroundings. The trail descends numerous moorland, ravies before ending at
Horombo Hut, which is set in a rocky valley with a fine stand of giant groundsels (Senecio
kilimajari) and phallic lobelias deckenii. Leaving behind the forest and following the ascending path
through alpine meadows on to the slopes of Mawenzi, Horombo Hut Camps are reached. From
here you shall be able to see the lights of Moshi town during the night on a clear sky. You shall have
rest dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Horombo Hut 3720m To Zebra Rock 4100 Saddle4200 To

Horombo Hut 3720
Today is a very important day as your body shall get use to the high altitude for a successful
summit climb. After breakfast the guide shall take you to climb high to the Zebra rock 4100m or
Saddle point 4200m and sleep low at 3720m back to Horombo Hut for lunch, dinner and overnight

Keep in mind to sip water all the time during the trek and walk slowly as they say in Kiswahili POLE
POLE and its the magic word for success to the summit. It’s very important to have a very GOOD
night’s sleep as you shall have to climb the summit the next night. So, no sleep, rest little and
trekking only.

Day 4: Horombo Hut 3720m To Kibo Hut 4700m

After breakfast you shall ascend the alpine desert and it shall be a very tiring trek therefore it is
very much essential that you walk slowly –POLE POLE- not forgetting to drink enough water on
the way so as to increase the level of oxygen in your body at the high altitude. From Horombo Hut
there are two trails to the Saddle (the area between Kibo and Mawenzi which is almost 7kms). The
right fork is very stony and eroded and is the most direct route to the Saddle and Mawenzi. From
the Saddle (about 2hours from Horombo), there are trails to Mawenzi Hut (1hour) or Mawenzi Tarn
Hut (2hours) and across the length of the Saddle to Kibo Hut (3hours). The left fork from Horombo
Hut is an easier trail and emerges on the Saddle much closer and passing THE LAST WATER
POINT AT 4130M to Kibo and about 1km from Kibo Hut. The landscape now becomes rockier and
rugged until the Saddle is reached. At Kibo Hut you shall get ready for your final preparations for
the summit climb at midnight to take as much rest as possible before the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut 4700 To Summit Uhuru Peak 5895 To Horombo Hut
3720
The trail to the summit lies directly behind Kibo Hut, to the west. It is normal to start this day’s climb
at midnight. (The reason for this is to see the sun rise over Mawenzi from the top of Kibo, the loose
stone scree is frozen –making it easier to climb, and you can get back in good time). The first part
is an uneven trail, which leads to the Hans Meyer Cave at 5150m, a good rest point. After that, the
trail makes more regular switch backs most of the way to the top, with a last scramble over rocks
to Johannes Notch and Gillman’s Point 5681m at the crater rim where you need all your mental and
physical strength as it is the steepest section of your trek. From there, the trail continues past
Stella Point to Uhuru Peak at 5895m the highest point of Africa. At the top there are stunning views
of the ice walls offset by rugged rocks. After a fast descend to Kibo Hut for a meal and rest,
continue to descend to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut 3720 To Marangu Gate (1850m)

green montain lodge,

End Point 15:00 - 17:00
