I.Context and Rationale

Malnutrition and food insecurity are two of the most predominant problems in
the whole world today. The effect of covid-19 pandemic contributes to the overall
prospects for food insecurity and malnutrition. Several countries which were not
affected by food insecurities for the past years may appear in the list of the affected
ones at present. An assessment suggest that the pandemic may add between 83
and 132 million people to the total number of undernourished in the world in 2020,
depending on each country’s economic growth scenario. The following year’s
expected recovery would decrease the number of undernourished, but still above
what was projected in the United Nation’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable
Development ( World Health Organization, 2020).
The UNICEF report concluded that 21.3 percent or more than one out of five
children aged 5 and below had stunted growth worldwide. Moreover, most of the
world’s undernourished are still found in Asia ( 381 million) and Africa (250 million).
The number also suggest that the rate of undernourished children is increasing. It is
also reported that the number of people affected by severe food insecurity rises to a
record high. In 2019, close 750 million ( nearly one in ten people worldwide) were
exposed to critical levels of food insecurity(World Health Organization, 2020).
The Malnutrition problem in the Philippines is far more severe. There is an
estimated death toll of 95 children everyday because of malnutrition in the country.
Besides, it is found out that one in three Filipino children under five years old are
stunted or considered as too short for their age, and roughly 7 percent of children
are considered too thin for their height. Moreover, a 10th of Filipino adolescents are
now overweight(Lina, 2020).
To help address malnutrition and hunger among its students, the Depertment
of Education (DepEd) initiated the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program(GPP). It aims to
promote foods rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamin A and iron as primary inputs
and sources of school-based feeding. This project was started under DepEd order
No.293,s.of 2007. In support of the government’s hunger mitigation efforts, school
gardens at elementary and secondary levels ensure a continous supply of
vegetables for the students’ consumption.
In particular, Talaba Elementary School is always looking for ways to innovate
practices, strategies, and mechanisms in improving and sustaining the
implementation of GPP. One of the best practices of Talaba Elementary School in
Gulayan sa Paaralan is Mushroom Growing. Since mushrooms are a low-calorie
food that packs a nutritional punch, loaded with many health-boosting vitamins,
minerals, and antioxidants, they’ve long been recognized as an important part of any
diet. For instance, mushrooms raised with exposure to ultraviolet light are a good
source of vitamin D, an important component of bone and immune health.

The school is also looking for ways and means on how to provide income for
the school in order to cope with the school facilities that will aid the learners and
provide a safe and conducive area for learning.
The facts stated above urge the proponent to look further into the extent of
practices and sustainability mechanisms that will help sustain this program to
mitigate and possibly decrease malnourished school children’s rate, especially now
that they are in the most vulnerable state and additional Income Generating Project
of the school, since we are all aware of the market demands of mushrooms.
Furthermore, this study aims to determine the sustainability of mushroom growing in
Gulayan sa Paaralan Program Implementation.

II.Research Questions

This research sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the significant gains in implementing Kabutehan sa Paaralan?
2. How does the school sustain the implementation of Kabutehan sa
Paaralan?
3. What activities that will motivate the Grade V learners to mushroom
growing?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The researcher will focus on the effectivity and sustainability of the

implementation of Kabutehan sa Paaralan and the interest of Grade V Learners
anchored with The Gulayan sa Paaralan Program.
The school will conduct a symposium for General PTA , Barangay officials,
NGO’s and other stakeholders to discuss about the sustainability of the Gulayan sa
Paaralan Program on which the Growing of Mushroom is anchored. During the said
event, it will discuss about the partnership, dedication and the extent of practices
and sustainability mechanisms.

IV. Action Research Methods

a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The participants of this study will be the teachers, parents, stakeholders,
Barangay officials and the Grade V learners of Talaba Elementary School,Talaba,
Alubijid Misamis Oriental during the Academic Year 2022-2023.
b. Data Gathering Methods
This study will use Descriptive Research Method as it involves collecting
data in determining the existing conditions. It will also described the current situation
of the implementation of mushroom growing in Talaba Elementary School, taking
into consideration the extent of practices, and the sustainability mechanisms of the
implementation of mushroom growing in Talaba Elementary School.

Research fund has to be considered in this study for the learners as the
subject. Consequently, the main purpose of this action research is to escalate the
interest of the Grade V Pupils in EPP specifically the Agriculture, through Mushroom
Growing in a Fruiting Bag. The researcher will confer the research project with the
parents, School Head and District Supervisor with regards to resources needed as
follows.

VII. Plans For Dissemination and Utilization

The result of the action research will be based on the result of thorough
analysis of data of Growing Mushrooms in a Fruiting Bags. The study will reveal
otherwise, looking into consideration other factors before implementing the
intervention.
The findings will be disseminated through conferences and publication. The
findings also be cascaded to the policy division of the Depertment of Education for
