South Korea will implement stricter sulfur emission control areas (SECAs) in two phases. Beginning in September 2020, ships must use 0.1% sulfur fuel while berthing and anchoring within five port areas. Starting in January 2022, ships must use 0.1% sulfur fuel at all times while navigating, berthing and anchoring within the SECAs from entry to exit. The new regulations apply to designated coastal waters, not open seas, and South Korea has no plans currently to expand the SECA zones.
