How do we implement quantitative research to learn more about nature,
people and their behavior? This question has no one answer because there is no
One core approach to doing quantitative research is through hypothesis-
driven research: the creation and testing of a prediction about our surroundings. Alternatively, there is descriptive research, where we learn about the world around us without a hypothesis, and base our analysis only on measurable observables. Furthermore, there is data-driven research, where data is the central source of insight and theory. Here, data is a collection of raw information, such as numbers, words, ideas, observations, measurements or descriptions. Qualitative research uses data of the descriptive form (i.e., words, ideas, descriptions) while quantitative research uses data of the numerical form (numbers, observations, measurements). We will discuss all these key approaches for conducting quantitative research further, but it is important to realize that even within these strategies there is flexibility, and there is no one right way to do quantitative research. The best way will be that which will give the most reliable and useful results in an efficient manner. Exercises: Make sure you have a reason for each answer that you give. 1. Can qualitative research be descriptive research? (yes or no) 2. Can quantitative research be descriptive research? (yes or no) 3. Can qualitative research be data-driven research? (yes or no)
