PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

Concept Notes:
Topic selection involves the tedious
The following are the different types used when quantitative process of establishing what a research
approach is considered: wants to investigate. Topics are selected
1.Descriptive research involves the collection of data to either
test a hypothesis or describe the variable mentioned on the from review of initial literature,
study. Data, which are typically numeric, are collected through observation of a phenomenon, and
surveys, interviews, or observations. Most researchers in
consideration of what interets the
science and technology, engineering, and social sceinces use
this type of quantitative approach. For example, if you want to researcher.
describe the processs of photosynthesis , you have to observe
the occurence of the event, write your obervations, and
integrate the data for description.
2.Correlational research attempts to determine the level of relation between two or more quatifiable
variables. The correlation between two variables does not mean that one variable causes the other, but it
can be used to predict their values. To determine the strength of the relationship, researcher get the
correlation coefficient and the p value.
3.Experimental research is similar to causal-comparative research, in that it also measures the effect of
the independent vairabl(cause) to the dependent variable(effect); however, the researcher can control the
independent variables in the study, wherein the participants are ramdomly assigned.
4.Quasi-experimental designs are an alternative to determine the causes and effects between
two variables that cannot be sunjected to experimental control. Most of the time this design is
used on naturally given phenomenon and its effect on the people who are experiencing the
occurence. One examples is when you want to know the effect of a calamity on its victims.

Concept Notes:
Writing a Research Title
The research titel is an important part of your paper, as it provides a brief description of what your study
is all about: from the issue to the sample, theory , and data analysis. Your titles can be revised as your
project develops. As such, you have plenty of working research titles until you decide on the final one.

The following are some of the reminders in writing your research title:
1. Set a 10-12 word limit for titles
2. Summarize the main idea or issue, if not the argument of the paper.
3. Identify the primary variables and the relationship among them, as well as the theoritical issues
underlying these.
4. Identify the populations(s) used.
5. Do not use words such as ‘study of’ or ‘an experimental research in,’as these words or phrases
are redundant.
6. Only include words that provide important and sufficient information about the research.

Activity

1. What title fits your study? Which of the above considerations did you observe in writing your
research title?
