GETTING STARTED

CHAPTER 2 - UPGRADING RECURDYN

This chapter introduces the general information about upgrading RecurDyn and its
License Server.

THE VERSION NUMBERS

The version numbers used for RecurDyn indicate the Major Version, Minor Release, and
Service Pack. For example, RecurDyn V8R5 SP1 indicates Major Version 8, Minor Release
5, Service Pack 1. Major upgrades to RecurDyn functionality are made in the major
versions, while minor upgrades are made to the minor releases. Further changes and
bug fixes are made in service packs.

INSTALLING THE MULTIPLE VERSIONS

Multiple versions of RecurDyn can be installed onto the same computer, as long as the
versions down to the Minor Release level are different (i.e. V8R4 SP1, V8R5 SP2, and
V9R3 SP1 could all be installed because the “VXRX” portions of the version numbers are
different).
Within each minor release, though, only one Service Pack can exist on a computer. For
example, V8R5 and V8R5 SP1 could not both exist on the same computer, or V9R3 SP1
and V9R3 SP2 couldn’t both exist on the same computer.

INSTALLING THE SERVICE PACK VERSION

When a Service Pack is available as an executable patch (.exe file), then it can be run on
top of the existing version it applies to (including if an older service pack has been
installed). If the service pack is only available as a full installation, however, then the
existing version that it applies to must be uninstalled first before the new service pack
installation is performed (again, including if an older service pack has been installed).

UPGRADING THE RECURDYN LICENSE SERVER

Whenever a new major version of RecurDyn has been installed, the existing RecurDyn
License Server should be uninstalled first and the new one should be installed in order
for the new version of RecurDyn to work properly. The RecurDyn License Server is
backwards-compatible, so that once the new version is installed, it will work for both
the new and old versions of RecurDyn.
The RecurDyn License Server will also have to be upgraded if a new minor release of
RecurDyn has been installed, and the user wants to use a new module that’s been added

10
GETTING STARTED

in that release. The existing license server will not recognize the request for the new
module type.
If users have further questions as to whether they need to upgrade the license server,
they can contact their local RecurDyn support organization or distributor.

Note: Before uninstalling the existing license server, a backup can be made of the
current license file which resides in the license server’s installation directory (usually
“C:\Program Files\FunctionBay, Inc\FunctionBay License Server”). Then during
installation of the new license server, the user can easily locate the license file.

11
CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

CHAPTER 3 – CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

There are several requisites before RecurDyn installation. Using the Check Pre-
Requirements allows users to confirm whether the requisites are satisfied. If there are
unsatisfied programs the user can install the programs using it.

1. Click the Check Pre-Requirements in the RecurDyn installation program.

12
CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

2. The Check Pre-Requirements dialog is shown up, the user can figure out what
programs are required to install RecurDyn.

If some requirements are not checked, press Install button to setup the programs. Then
the installation processes will be executed one by one.

Note1: The use of pre-requirements software in RecurDyn is as follows.

o .NET Frameworks 3.5 – VSTA Package
o .NET Frameworks 4.0 – Durability
o VSTA – VSTA Package
o VS2015 Redistributable x64 – Compiler used in GUI and Solver as a whole
o VS2017 Redistributable x86 – KISSsoft Gear Train
o VS2010 Redistributable x64 – Solver (MEHD, TNO)
o VS2010 Redistributable x86 – Solver (MEHD, TNO)
o VS2008 SP1 Redistributable x64 – VSTA Package
o VS2008 SP1 Redistributable x86 – VSTA Package
o VS2005 SP1 Redistributable x86 – VSTA Package
o VS2005 Remote Debugger Light x64 – VSTA Package

Note2: This rarely happens, but ribbon menu icons can be inactive because VS2015
Redistributable x64 was not installed correctly. It is recommended to reinstall the
VS2015 Redistributable x64 again to fix the issue.

13
CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

Note3: Problem might occur when installing .NET Framework 3.5 with exe file. It might
not be installed in Windows 10. To install the .NET Framework 3.5, follow the below
processes. Internet connection is necessary in this process.

1. Go to Control Panel – Programs – Turn Windows features on or off

2. Check .NET Framework 3.5 (include .NET 2.0 and 3.0), select OK, and reboot
your computer if prompted.

14
CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

Note4: To install .NET Framework 3.5 follow the below process. You need Windows
Installation Media such as DVD, ISO image or USB.

1. Insert the Windows Installation DVD, or double-click your ISO image, or insert
USB drive, according to what you have.
2. Open 'This PC' and note the drive letter of the Windows installation media.

15
CHECKING PRE-REQUIREMENTS

3. Open Command Prompt as Admin (Press Win + X and click Command Prompt
(Admin)) and type the following command:
Be sure to replace the Y with the drive letter of the Installation media.
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:Y:\sources\sxs
/LimitAccess

This will install .NET framework 3.5 in Windows.

Note5: From V9R5 version, users using DriveTrain toolkit must have the Window Media
Feature Pack installed on their computer. This has been added as a Requirement in the
2020 version of KISSsoft. You can download it with link below:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack

16
INSTALLING FUNCTIONBAY LICENSE SERVER

CHAPTER 4 - INSTALLING FUNCTIONBAY LICENSE SERVER

A FunctionBay License Server provides licenses for RecurDyn and its modules to any
computer on the network. Licenses are checked out when RecurDyn is launched,
according to the RecurDyn Toolkits Settings. Licenses are checked back in when the
user exits RecurDyn.

The FunctionBay License Server software is typically installed on a dedicated server

computer. However, if using Node-Locked Licenses should install the FunctionBay
License Server on a local computer.

1. The Install License Server is installed using the option from the RecurDyn DVD
Installation screen as shown in the figure.

17
INSTALLING FUNCTIONBAY LICENSE SERVER

2. The Destination Location for the FunctionBay license server must be defined. The
default location is typical for a Windows application.

3. You can choose a different location by clicking Browse.

4. Click Next to accept the specified directory.

18
INSTALLING FUNCTIONBAY LICENSE SERVER

5. A browser window appears. The location of the RecurDyn license file that was
provided by the local RecurDyn sales representative should be set.

6. The License Server files will be copied to the installation directory. If you want to
stop the FunctionBay License Server installation, click the Cancel button.

7. Click the Finish button and the installation is complete.

19
INSTALLING FUNCTIONBAY LICENSE SERVER

8. The Licenser Server software should be running now. You can go to the Program
Folder of the FunctionBay License Server (accessed from the Start button, then
selecting All Programs) and run the FLEXlm Utility in order to check the status of
the License Server.

⚫ The directory of log file is C:\ProgramData\FunctionBay, Inc\FunctionBay

License Server.

9. The FLEXlm Utility provides capabilities to start and stop the License Server, as well
as perform diagnostics. The FLEXlm End Users Guide provides valuable information
about the License Server.

Note: Using the license server version offered with the RecurDyn version is required.

20
INSTALLING RECURDYN

◼ If you use the previous license server version, it might have some problems to
confirm the RecurDyn license.

SOLVING PROBLEM
FlexNet Version v11.14.0 is required. From v11.13.1, the logon user of the service
created via lmtools.exe has been changed from LOCAL SYSTEM to LOCAL SERVICE.
Please refer to following contents copied from FlexNet Publisher v11.13.1 Release
Notes.

Previously, lmtools or installs.exe would install lmgrd as a service with LocalSystem

privileges.
Similarly, lmadmin, when installed as a service, would be installed with LocalSystem
privileges.
To reduce potential attack vectors on the Windows license server, lmgrd and lmadmin
are now installed as services with LocalService privileges (FNP-10474, FNP-10475).

❖ If it takes a long time to start the license server and the below message is shown at
the bottom of the Start / Stop / Reread tab, the license server is not started
correctly.
– “VD is starting, please check vendor daemon's status in debug log”.

In order to resolve this problem, some guides are provided.

1) Force shutdown of the license server using lmdown in CMD.

① From the Start button of Windows, select: All Programs → Accessories →

Command Prompt

② Type "<Install Dir>\lmdown.exe" -c "<License File Path>" -q

You must change <Install Dir> and <License File Path> to its actual file
path. For example, "C:\Program Files\FunctionBay, Inc\FunctionBay License
Server\lmdown.exe" -c "C:\Program Files\FunctionBay, Inc\FunctionBay
License Server\FB-license-PC.dat" -q

③ If server has closed, click Start Button in LMTOOLS to start server,

2) Run ServiceTrans.bat file in the install directory as an administrator. In the batch

file, you need to change the path as your install directory.

21
INSTALLING RECURDYN

3) Below the Service/License File tab in LMTOOLS, there is option “LMTOOLS ignores
license file path environment variables”. Make sure to click it and try to restart the
service

4) Or, change the user account that the service can use to log on as Local System
account.

① End process lmgrd.exe on Windows Task Manager.

② Click Start, click in the Start Search box, type services.msc, and then press

22
INSTALLING RECURDYN

ENTER.

③ In Services window select License Manager Service > right-click and select
Properties

④ In Service Properties window, select Local System account on Log On tab.

You can now start your service in LMTOOLS.

23
INSTALLING RECURDYN

❖ It will take a long time to start the service automatically when a computer is
started. Because the default Startup type is changed to Automatic (Delayed
Start) since FlexNet Version v11.13.1 as the following figure. If you want to
set the previous type, please change the Startup type as Automatic manually.

24
INSTALLING RECURDYN

❖ The default port number in the license file supported from FunctionBay is 11800. If
other services are stopped by starting FunctionBay License Server, they maybe use
same port number. In order to resolve it, we recommend specifying port number in
the SERVER line for FunctionBay License Server.

Since V9R1, FlexNet Version v11.14.0 is officially used. Later versions are additionally
distributed in the install directory. FunctionBay supports up to FlexNet Version
v11.16.5.1. FlexNet install path is as follows.

✓ 11.14.0
<Install Package >\FunctionBay LicenseServer\11.14.0\

✓ 11.15.0
< Install Package >\FunctionBay LicenseServer\11.15.0\

✓ 11.16.0
< Install Package >\FunctionBay LicenseServer\11.16.0\

✓ 11.16.5.1
< Install Package >\FunctionBay LicenseServer\11.16.5.1\

✓ 11.17.2.0
< Install Package >\FunctionBay LicenseServer\11.17.2.0\

LICENSING CONTROL TO AUTOMATIC CHECK-IN FUNCTION

The user can optionally install a new license server (FlexNet version v11.16). This
version provides new license control function. Older versions are not supported. This
feature is a feature that returns the license if you do not use the toolkit during specific
time.

25
INSTALLING RECURDYN

USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY

CHAPTER 8 - USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY

The License Servers send messages periodically to each other to make sure at least two
servers running and communicating. A pair of servers is configured when at least two of
the three license servers are running and communicating with each other.
The License Servers are distinguished as either primary, secondary, or tertiary. Also, one
License Server is specified as the master (m) and is responsible for providing licenses to
use RecurDyn, recording information into the debug log, and recording information into
the report log. If the master is not responded, another License Server is specified the
master.

◼ In the first right figure, the

primary License Server is the
master. When the user’s
computer sends a checkout
request for a license, the
master responds and then
provides the license to use
RecurDyn.

◼ In the second right figure, the

secondary License Server is
the master. Because the
primary License Server which
was specified as the master is
not responded, the secondary
License Server becomes the
master.
The tertiary server can never
be the master. If both primary
and secondary license servers are not responded, licenses are no longer provided
to use RecurDyn. The master will not provide licenses although at least two license
servers try to running and communicating.

71
USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY

STEP TO INSTALL THE REDUNDANT LICENSE

1. Set up the redundant license in the each three-server computers.
(Chapter 4 explains to install the License Server.)

redundant license. The following is an example of the license file configured for three-
server redundancy.

Host ID Physical Address TCP/IP Port Number

Server1 001122334455 11800
Server2 223344550011 11800
Server3 554433221100 11800

And the user should enter the three servers installed in the RecurDyn License Manager
window as the right example.

If the above process is failed, please refer to the below section.

72

CHAPTER 9 - FINISHING TOUCHES

PROCESSNET INITIALIZATION
While all files were extracted from the RecurDyn DVD during the installation steps of the
previous chapters, an installation step remains. ProcessNet is a custom application
environment with software components that are installed the first time that the ProcessNet
Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is opened after RecurDyn is installed.
Therefore, ProcessNet should be opened at the time of installation while administrative
user privileges are available.

1. To enter the Integrated Development Environment

(IDE), from the ProcessNet menu, select ProcessNet
IDE as shown in the figure.

2. A small window appears that tells you that

RecurDyn is Initializing ProcessNet. It may take a few
minutes to perform the entire initialization process
because this is the first time that the ProcessNet IDE
is used after the RecurDyn installation. Later the end user will find that the
initialization takes 10 to 15 seconds. The small window puts itself away when the
initialization is complete.

3. A new window appears with the heading ProcessNet – RecurDyn, as shown below.

74
FINISHING TOUCHES

4. RecurDyn is now ready to for use with account without administrative privileges as
well as with administrative privileges.
