What Matters

“A roadmap to the peaceful and prosperous future for the people and the planet”. This is what we need --
a need, a responsibility that we should fulfill. Shouldn’t we? To the numerous problems we and the planet
face, we should have priorities. The poverty, education, economic development, inequalities and justice
system of every country. Shouldn’t this be our main concerns?

As the world changes, poverty, lack of education, injustice, inflation , and inequality become an even
bigger problem for everyone over time. According to United Nations “Nowcast estimates the global
poverty rate in 2019 at 8.2 % “. While on 2020 World Bank statistical analysis showed that poverty is “
between 9.1% and 9.4% of the world’s population in 2020, according to the biennial Poverty and Shared
Prosperity Report” this analysis shows that poverty rose on year 2020 to 2021 which affected the life of
many families. Problems such as hunger and illness are effects of poverty which reduce a person capacity
to work that led them to penury. In addition to this, inflation which is the current problem of many
countries makes it very hard for people to keep up with the increasing cost.
Furthermore, Poverty can also affect one’s education through divide in the quality of education they can
afford. For example in the Philippines, the data gathered by the Manila Times shows that “90.9% Filipino
children at aged of ten appear to be in a situation of learning poverty”. This should be resolved as quality
education contributes to the economical development of the country through the decent work the graduate
students will have. Besides poverty there are other factors that could affect a person’s education such as
inequality. This inequality creates divide on the ability of individuals to access proper education which
leads to further division on the ability of individuals to function properly for the society.
Since the individuals cannot function properly to the society, they are often discriminated for their
education and economic status and this leads to them often being mistreated and creates injustice.
According to Oxford Academic (2013) “injustice creates conditions that adversely affect the health of
individuals and communities. It denies individuals and groups equal opportunity to have their basic
human needs met. It violates fundamental human rights”. People’s feeling of fulfillment and self-worth
are destroyed by this, which can lead to crime, sickness, and environmental destruction. If people are
denied the opportunity for a better life, we cannot accomplish sustainable development and improve the
earth for everyone.
Moreover, sustainable development is seriously threatened by conflict, insecurity, inadequate institutions,
and restricted access to justice as stated by the United Nations. With this kinds of problems we need a
strong institution and a fair justice system that can help us manage such problems. According to World
Justice Project, in 2018, more nations saw a downturn in their criminal justice systems than an
improvement or stability. This is very alarming since justice systems serve as key pillars to safeguard
rights and guarantee that the legal needs of citizens are met. The effective and fair justice system requires
consideration of the full continuum of services, ranging from accessibility of legal information and legal
assistance to formal (such as courts) and alternative dispute resolution, and their enforcement mechanisms
(OECD, 2019). In addition, strong institutions should be established because according to Nyamadzawo,
institutions play a key role in ensuring fair resource allocation, legal compliance, and economic
expansion. Economic deterioration will be the outcome of poor decision-making, a lack of plan, and
unwillingness. Additionally, according to a report released by the Task Force on Justice, granting
everyone access to basic justice could save the world’s economy billions of dollars annually by
preventing lost wages and stress-related illnesses brought on by the need to seek legal redress, which can
cost nations up to 3% of their annual GDP.

Poverty, quality education, economic development, inequalities, justice system and institutions should be
our top priorities. They are growing obstacles but as we cross each obstacle we will find our way how to
cross the other. As we solve the problem of quality of education, we can find our way to solve poverty,
economical development and justice system and institutions. As we fix the justice system and institutions,
it can help solve every other problems. As we continue to fix the conflicts of humanity we can join hands
and save the planet leading to a peaceful and prosperous future for us and the planet. Hence, in order to
achieve this prosperity which we’ve been yearning for for a long time, there needs to be a movement, a
change, and a purposeful dedication to make this happen. As an individual or a student, let us be part of
building a beneficial reform for each and every one of us that will make our home a better place to live in.
