Trajectum  is  the  Roman  name  for  the  military  settlement  
that  formed  the  core  of  the  original  old  town,  which  is  where

the  Dom  Tower,  once  part  of  the  Cathedral  of  St  Martin,  also  
known  as  the  Dom  Church,  stands.  The  highest  tower  in  the  
Netherlands,  it  is  the  symbol  of  the  city.
The  primarily  LED-­based  scheme  had  to  be  designed  within  
VRPHWLJKWSUDFWLFDOSDUDPHWHUVJLYHQWKHKLVWRULFQDWXUHRIWKH
site.  No  drilling  into  the  stonework  was  allowed  and  sources  
FRXOGQRWEHYLVLEOHIURPEHORZ0RXQWLQJGHYLFHVKDGWREH
custom-­made  for  each  location.  
The  name  of  the  scheme  alludes  to  the  Latin  phrase,  ‘In  
OXPLQHWXRYLGHELPXVOXPHQ¶RUµ,Q\RXUOLJKWZHVKDOOVHH
the  light’.  The  concept  is  based  on  bringing  the  three  key  
DUFKLWHFWXUDOHOHPHQWVWRJHWKHUDQGFRQYH\LQJDVHQVHRI  
both  their  past  and  present.  
7KHFDWKHGUDOKDVEHHQJLYHQDODQWHUQHIIHFWZLWKOLJKW
glowing  through  the  stained  glass  windows  and  internal  faces  
of  the  buttresses,  representing  the  idea  that  light  comes  from  
within.  Highlighting  to  the  gable  wall  of  the  square,  where  
the  west  end  of  the  cathedral  once  stood,  recalls  the  past.  
7KHWRZHUYLHZHGIURPDOORYHUWKHFLW\FRPELQHVVWDWLFDQG
dynamic  white  light  schemes  to  form  the  centrepiece.  
After  dark,  a  light  sequence  begins  on  the  quarter  hour  as  
the  tower  clock  begins  to  chime.  The  church,  square  and  tower  
appear  to  ‘breathe’  in  unison  as  the  light  pulses.  The  rhythm  
accelerates  and  bursts  of  light,  which  represent  memories,  
appear  to  ascend  the  tower.  As  the  bells  begin  to  peal  and  the  
hour  strikes,  multiple  bursts  of  light  and  patterns  are  unleashed,
