What it is!

Dinning Etiquette refers to proper


manners and behavior in a formal dining
situation or around the dinning table in
restaurant, hotel or home.
Importance of
Dinning Etiquette

1 In foreign, 80% of the interviews are at dinner only.

2 Interviewers want to know that you can socialize with clients.

3 Manners followed by you at dinning will evaluate your personality.

4 As an individual, its important to know it.

Making Reservations
1. Restaurant Reservations are like any other appointments.
2. If you make reservations, stick to it.
3. Call ahead if you are going to be late for more than 15 minutes.
4. Cancel as far advance as possible.

Getting Seated
1. Never take your seat before the host takes his seat.
2. The gentleman should always help the lady to be seated.
3. Do not run around to help the lady who is not beside you.
4. Always take the seat from the left side of the chair.
5. Seat comfortably, not so slouchy or rigidly.
6. Put your hands on the lap.
7. Do not place your elbow on the table.

Ordering

1. Select a medium-priced meal.


2. Ask the host for recommendations.
3. Stay away from messy or finger foods.
4. Be courteous to servers but not overly talkative.

How to use Napkins

1. The meal begins when the host unfolds his napkin.


2. This is your signal to do the same.
3. Pick up your napkin by a corner and let it fall open.
4. Do not shake it to open and do not totally unfold it.
5. Do not clean the cutlery or wipe your face or nose with that.

6. Place the napkin on your lap.
7. Put your loosely fold napkin to right or left of your plate to excuse
yourself from the table.
8. The host will signal the end of the meal by placing his napkin on
the table.
9. To end your meal, leave the napkin semi-folded on the left side of
the table setup.

When to Start Eating


1. Wait until everyone is served at your table before beginning to eat.
2. If the host starts eating, you will start your meal.

1. Solid items on the left and liquid
items on the right.
2. Foods are served from left and
dished are removed from right.
3. Start with the knife, fork, or spoon
that is farthest from the plate.

How to use utensils


1. Hold the knife in the right hand and fork in the left hand.
2. Eat food with fork still in left hand.
3. If you want to drink anything from the goblets, put both down the
utensils on the plate.
4. Do not leave spoons inside cup, bowl or glass while not eating or
consuming.

5. Never put the used utensils on the linen, find a place for it.
6. Move outside in for solid items, for liquid or thick items inside out.

How to use glassware


1. Hold the glassware or goblet by its stem.
2. Do not drink if you have food in your mouth.
3. Do not make the goblets/glass completely empty.
4. Always try to make the sips smaller.

1. Do not talk with food in your mouth.
2. Always taste your food before seasoning it.
3. If anyone asks for salt or pepper, pass both together.
4. Always use serving utensils to serve yourself, not your one.
5. Don’t blow on your food to cool it off.
6. It is acceptable to leave some food on plate, if you are full or
unable to eat.
7. Don’t play with foods or utensils.

8. Do not hold food on the fork or spoon while talking.
9. Do not wave your silverware in the air or point with it.
10. Once used, your utensils, including the handles, must not touch
the table again.
11. Never ask anyone, why they have not eaten all the food.
12. Don’t make an issue if you don’t like something or can’t eat it.
13. Do not request food other than which is being served.

On Completion of Dinner
Important Do and Don’t

1 Make the bites smaller.

2 Make conversation at the dinner table.

3 Do not forget to say “Please” and “Thank You”

4 Do not crack the bones or make noise while stirring liquid items.

5 Remember, this is not your last meal.
