FUNDAMENTALS OF SURVEYING
CE 211 – 18
FIELDWORK NO. 8
REACTION PAPER ON HOW TO LAYOUT A BUILDING
RATING
In the video, before the surveyor was able to layout out his measurements, it is
predetermined as to where the location or the specified site to be worked on. Certain
instruments and tools are also prepared such as the grading scale, the 180L, couple of
Jett Rods, wooden boards, and most notably the surveyor’s measuring tape. The
surveyor begins laying out and it is observable how careful and show different techniques
in order to achieve the accurate and perfect measurements needed and the fact that
“perfect measurements” does not only rely upon physical measurements but mainly on
math as to what the surveyor emphasized.
The 1/16” in 40ft is about 8000 (7680, to be precise) in linear dimension and about 1
minute of arc in angle. If those tolerances were applied in proportion to the scale to be
worked on it’d be very much wise to be careful if it were to be hit. No wonder they have
to check and re-check their layout. That’s not only precision work, it is high precision work
even though the surveyors are running string over dirt.
