    TONNAGE

    International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969


    TONNAGE -

     Definition (ITC 69, Article 2)

     GT – The measure of the overall size of a ship

     GT = K1 V

    Whereas:
     K1 = 0.2 + 0.02 log10 𝑉

     V = Total volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship in cubic metres


     NT – The measure of the useful capacity of a ship

     NT = 𝐾1 𝑉2 + 𝐾3 𝑁1 +

     Whereas,

     𝐾1 = 0.2 + 0.02 log10 𝑉2

     𝑉2 = total volume of cargo spaces in cubic metres

     𝑑 = moulded draught amidships in metres

     𝐷 = moulded depth amidships in metres

     𝐾3 = 1.25 × 10000

     𝑁1 = number of passengers in cabins with not more than 8 berths

     𝑁2 = number of other passengers

     Application (ITC 69, Article 3)

     New ships
     existing ships which undergo alterations or modifications
     existing ships if the owner so requests
     all existing ships, twelve years after the date on which the Convention comes into force
     Existing ships to which the present Convention has been applied
     Exceptions (ITC 69,Article 4)

     Ships of war
     Ships less then 24 meter in length
     Enclosed Spaces
     all those spaces which are bounded by the ship’s hull, by fixed or portable
    partitions or bulkheads, by decks or coverings other than permanent or movable
    awnings

     Excluded Spaces
     not be included in the volume of enclosed spaces
