ON THE CROSS AND DISCIPLESHIP

T
he cross loomed large in the life of Christ. It was the cross of rejec-
tion, ingratitude, aggressiveness, cruelty and betrayal – the cross
imposed on him by human sinfulness in all its forms. Out of love
for him, Jesus’ disciples would have wanted that he be spared so much
undeserved suffering. But Jesus knew that accepting it with love was
the only way to bring about the salvation of mankind.
Salvation from sin passes through suffering endured with love
and out of love. Such is the essential condition to be numbered among
Jesus’ disciples. Such is the message he addresses to us today.

1st Reading Jer 20:7-9
Faithfulness to God may
arouse against us opposition and
even persecution. On the other

lemma experienced by Jeremiah,

reflection on his trying situation.

We should constantly seek
what is good and perfect. This
will transform our life into a

the Lord. Such is the essence of
St. Paul’s message to the faithful
of Rome and to us.

I urge you, brothers and
sisters, by the mercies of God,

Jesus began to show his
disciples that he must go to
Jerusalem and suffer great-
ly from the elders, the chief
priests, and the scribes, and

sus aside and began to rebuke
him, “God forbid, Lord! No
such thing shall ever happen
to you.” He turned and said to
Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!
You are an obstacle to me. You
are thinking not as God does,
but as human beings do.”
Then Jesus said to his
disciples, “Whoever wishes
to come after me must deny
himself, take up his cross,
and follow me. For whoever
wishes to save his life will lose
it, but whoever loses his life
for my sake will find it. What
profit would there be for one
to gain the whole world and
forfeit his life? Or what can
one give in exchange for his
life? For the Son of Man will
come with his angels in his Fa-

Profession of Faith
(Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed)
All –I believe in one God, the Fa-
ther almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, of all things visible
and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father be-
fore all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were
made. For us men and for our
salvation he came down from
heaven, (bow)* and by the Holy
Spirit was incarnate of the Vir-
gin Mary, and became man.*
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suf-
fered death and was buried, and
rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have
no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is adored and glori-
fied, who has spoken through
the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, cath-
olic and apostolic Church. I
confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins and I look
forward to the resurrection of
the dead and the life of the world
to come. Amen!
Prayer of the Faithful
P –Today the Lord Jesus has
reminded us about the impor-
tance of living a life of generous
faithfulness to God’s plan for
us. Aware of our weakness and
of the difficulties which a life of
discipleship entails, let us hum-
bly plead for the help we need:
All – Lord, help us follow you!
C –That the lifestyle of the
Church as the “community of
Jesus’ disciples” may be charac-
terized by constant faithfulness
to the Gospel principles, let us
pray! R.
C –That the Holy Father,
our Bishop, priests, and all
other spiritual leaders may be
strengthened by God’s grace as
they bravely strive to follow the
example of Jesus in all they do,
let us pray! R.
C –That our civil leaders may
work for the common good by
serving the people rather than
pursuing their personal or parti-
san interests, let us pray! R.
C –That all those who suffer
physically or emotionally may
learn to carry their crosses in
union with Jesus and thereby
transform them into instruments

 Fatima Not Just a Devotion But Our Mission (Part 1)

“Consecration (to Mary) is not just a devotion. It
is a mission.” Dr. Peter Howard challenged everyone
at the National Marian Congress on the Centennial
of the Apparitions of Fatima to not just pray the con-
secration to Mary but to live it and share it with others.
Mary had said in her June 13, 1917 apparition at
Fatima, „My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge
and the way that will lead you to God.‰ Dr. Howard
said that, because we know the secret to get to
heaven is to consecrate ourselves to Mama Mary, we
should spread it so everyone would be saved.
Our Fault There Is No Peace
Angelyn Dee, one of the main speakers at the
Congress held last July 7-8, 2017 at SMX Convention
Center, related how at an international gathering, a
Japanese ambassador approached a Catholic priest
and told him, “You Catholics, all of you – we do not
have peace in the world. It is your fault.”
When the priest asked why he was blaming the
Catholics, the ambassador replied, “I’ve read about
this. The Lady came to you at Fatima, right? That’s
what you believe? She told you what to do to secure
peace in the world. Well, there’s no peace in the
world, so obviously you Catholics haven’t done it.”
The priest tried to reason with him that peace
is everyone’s responsibility, not just the Catholics’.
But the ambassador objected, “No, she came to you
Catholics. Not to Buddhists. Not to Hindus. She came
to you, and it is your responsibility.”
Ms. Dee pointed out how stinging but true were
the words of the ambassador. It is our responsibility as
Catholics because we have the weapons for peace.
We have the Eucharist and the Rosary. And yes, Mary
did tell us what to do to obtain peace in the world. But
sadly, we haven’t done it.
What to Do to Obtain Peace
Summarizing our Lady’s messages at Fatima, Ms.
Dee explained that we need to respond or RSVP Mary’s
invitation for us to help obtain not just world peace but
the conversion of sinners and the reparation of her Im-
maculate Heart. RSVP stands for:
R ă Rosary Mary told the children at Fatima, “Continue
to pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of
the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world and
the end of the war, because only she can help you.”
Reparation Mary requested for 5 First Saturdays in
order to make reparation for the 5 kinds of offenses and
blasphemies uttered against her Immaculate Heart
S ă Sacrifices Offering our sacrifices for the reparation
of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the conversion of
sinners, Saturdays referring to the 5 First Saturdays
devotion, Scapular Lucia wrote, “The scapular and the
Rosary are inseparable.” Therefore, Ms. Dee encour-
ages us to wear the brown scapular as a sign of our love
and devotion to Mama Mary.
V- Victory which can be achieved through Consecra-
tion to Mary, because “where the Blessed Virgin Mary
is, there her Divine Son is”
P ă Prayer Ms. Dee reminded the audience of what the
Angel of Peace had told the children, “Play less, pray
more” and Mama Mary’s revelation that many souls go to
hell because there is no one to pray for them, Penance
Our Lady of Fatima reminds us to turn away from evil
and repair the damage done by our sins.
That Our Lady can bring peace to our world was
confirmed later on by Jesus to Lucia. He said, “I have
given to the hands of my mother the peace of this world.”
