Katsushaki Hokusai, or better known as Hokusai, is one of the most prominent artists from the
Edo period; and has played a tremendous role in building the foundation of visual arts in Japan. His
artworks fall under the category of Edo Ukiyo or Ukiyo-E—which is often translated to “the floating
world”. Although the concepts may vary in terms of visuals, Hokusai prefers to incorporate the nature
and reality in his artworks; with that, I can say that Theory of Imitationism supports art style.
Additionally, his artworks are known for its simplicity and serenity in illustrating and giving life to
Japanese culture. Hokusai’s way of imitating nature and making it his own has become an appeal and has
served as an inspiration to visual artists of all generations ever since.
