What is the identity of the Holy Spirit?

What is Pentecost?
HOLY SPIRIT -descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles
-Empowers - a special feast of the Holy Spirit, which is celebrated fifty
-Love days after Easter. it is also known us the BIRTH OF THE
CHURCH.
-Serve
-time the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and others
-Continue (Mary, other women, and the apostles of Jesus).
-His mission - gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem

THE HOLY SPIRIT -Strengthened

-apostles in the form of tongues of fire - Inspired to preach about Jesus

-filled with inspiration to bring the Good News in parts of the
world
-empowered to go out and preach what they have learned
from their Master
Who is the Holy Spirit?
-The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity who
proceeds from the Father and the Son.
-The Holy Spirit is equal to the Father and the Son, therefore,
is fully God and eternal.
-The Holy Spirit sanctifies, makes holy, and brings life to the
church.
According to CFC 1265:
As the "Giver of life", the Holy Spirit gives life and empowers
the Church, its sacramental life, and resurrection to life
everlasting. The Nicene Creed says that, “We believe in the
Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is
worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.
-not afraid anymore to die
-became even more courageous and so they went out into the
streets of Jerusalem proclaiming the truth about Jesus
-About three thousand people were baptized. They were able
to fulfill the words of Jesus to them..."Make disciples of all
nations...(Matthew 28:18-20)
What are the works of the Holy Spirit?
• The Holy Spirit protects the Church from errors in teaching
matters of faith and morals. Indefectibility means the Church
of Christ will be present on Earth until the end of the world.
• The teaching of Christ will be safeguarded and mission of
Christ - spreading the Gospel and administering the
sacraments - will continue.
• The Church will always have a Pope and bishops, and she will
always teach the truth.
Pope - is the bishop of Rome, the leader of the whole Catholic
Church.
- Infallibility - authority of the pope

What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit?
Of spiritual gifts, Paul says, "To each is given the manifestation
of the Spirit for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7).
Spiritual gifts are talents and abilities given to Christians by
the Holy Spirit to serve the church.
In a body made of individual believers. It doesn't make sense
for each person to have the same gift – a Church made of all
teachers, and no - servants, would be ineffective. So the Holy
Spirit distributes the different gifts so that all the needs of the
Church can be filled and all people of the Church can be cared
for (1 Corinthians 12:11).
Today and always we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we
accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Jesus says in John 3:5,
"....unless one is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God.
• "When we accept Christ, God immediately sees us with His
Spirit. (2 Corinthians 1:22)
How is the Holy Spirit active in our lives today? What is the
role of the Holy Spirit in the Church?
• Remember that the Bible notes several roles the Holy Spirit
plays in the lives of the people today.
1. Holy Spirit provides conviction of sin to all people. John 6:8
notes, "And when the Holy Spirit comes, he will convict the
world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment".
2. The Holy Spirit serves as a helper or comforter - John 14:
16-17- Jesus saying," and I will ask the Father, and he will
give you another Helper, to be with you forever....Spirit of
Truth.
3. The Holy Spirit is to guide the believer into truth - John
16:13 - "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into
all the truth." Rather than depending on your human
reasoning, we have a supernatural guide in the form of God's
indwelling Holy Spirit.
4. The Holy Spirit helps believers to glorify the Lord. John 16:
14 reveals, "He will glorify me, for me, he will take what is mine
and declare it to you, "We have a desire to worship the Lord
because God's Spirit lives within us believers.
For believers, the Holy Spirit also gives special gifts. The gifts
are given to allow the church to work together to meet needs,
make disciples, and glorify God. (Ephesians 2:10)
5. The Holy Spirit also enables believers to produce the fruit of
the Spirit. Galatians 5: 22-23 shares, "but the fruit of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self- control, against such things there is no law.
"without God's Spirit, people are unable to produce fruitful
lives that reflect the desire of God.
6. The Holy Spirit indwells us as believers. He plays in our lives,
He seals us as belonging to God (See Ephesian 1: 13-14). The
Holy Spirit is the person of God who lives with us in our time on
earth and teaches us to truly know and follow God.
• We affirm our belief that the Holy Spirit gives life and
empowers us to share in the mission of Jesus.
• Let us try to discover how we can use the gifts of the Holy
Spirit in spreading the Gospel.
