Who do you have room for on your broom?

Directions: After reading Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and

Axel Scheffler, have students complete this whimsical art and writing
project. You will want to have miniature brooms made so they are ready
to put with student pictures. To make the broomsticks, I gathered small
sticks from my yard and then cut bunches of raffia to rubber band to
each stick. The sticks are approximately 6 inches in length. To make it
look as though the student is riding the broom, I asked them to pose
(knees bent) as if they were holding and riding on a broom. I copied the
pictures and then cutout each student so no background was included. I
then fashioned the broomstick behind the student so it would look like
they were flying through the sky. Students then complete the sentence
starter “I have room on my broom for…” Students can add additional
detail on where they will go with their guest(s). I had students add a
night sky backdrop before I hot glued their picture and broom. I must
say I loved seeing all my little witches flying around the room throughout
the month of October. It was also fun decoration for our Halloween
party.

Thank you for purchasing these Rhyming and
Writing Activity pages. My students loved the
book Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and
Axel Scheffler and the writing and art project
brought the story to a whole new level. Students
were excited to have the opportunity to transport
themselves into the story and decide who they
would have room for on their broom. The
rhyming pages were just an added bonus in
providing students additional practice in finding
word families from the story.

Have a fun and exciting writing experience this

Halloween!
