3. PLANNING INFORMATION
A. Applicability
This Service Bulletin is applicable to:
• Engine type: LEAP-1B
• Engine model(s): LEAP-1B21,LEAP-1B23,LEAP-1B25,LEAP-1B27,LEAP-1B28,LEAP-1B28B1,LEAP-
1B28B2,LEAP-1B28B2C,LEAP-1B28B3,LEAP-1B28BBJ1,LEAP-1B28BBJ2

B. Concurrent requirements
None.

C. Reason
(1) Objective:
To provide recommendations to LEAP-1B operators specific to RTS following the Boeing 737 MAX grounding
period.

(2) Condition:
Applicable to all on-wing LEAP-1B engines delivered to operators which are in preservation at the time of the
Boeing 737 MAX ungrounding.

(3) Cause:
The Boeing 737 MAX grounding is a unique situation following which CFM would like to provide additional
engine recommendations based on Boeing 737-7/8/8200/9/10 Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) preservation
procedures, review of potential significant event causes, and general abundance of caution to reduce the
opportunity for operational disruption during the RTS period.

(4) Inspection:
This Service Bulletin recommends additional inspections and tests be performed prior to next flight to improve the
reliability of the LEAP-1B engines during the RTS period.

(5) Substantiation:
Substantiation is by analysis.

D. Description
This Service Bulletin gives specific recommendations related to on-wing LEAP-1B engines delivered to operators
which are in preservation during the Boeing 737 MAX grounding period. These recommendations are given
in three sections:
- Engine depreservation.
- Recommendations to minimize opportunity for an operational event.
- Precautionary tests.

E. Compliance
Category 2
CFM recommends that you do this Service Bulletin before next flight.
Impact B
This recommendation is to address a condition that may result in an Increased Rate of In-Flight Shutdowns
(IFSD), Take-Off Aborts (TOA), Air Turn Backs (ATB) or Diversions (DIV).

Unless specified differently in the instructions that follow, CFM recommends all actions be done within 10 days
before the first flight of the aircraft after the original issuance of this Service Bulletin. It is not necessary to do the
actions again on subsequent flights if those flights are done within 30 days from the first flight.
- All applicable Boeing 737-7/8/8200/9/10 AMM preservation and depreservation procedures must be done
within this 30-day window.
- If the subsequent flight is done more than 30 days from the original flight, CFM recommends the actions be
done again and these guidelines be followed until normal scheduled service has restarted.

NOTE: This Service Bulletin can be done on wing.

This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your CFM product, or to help prevent
the occurrence of the event or condition described in this Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate
in the bulletin, that decision will be taken into consideration by CFM in evaluating future product performance
issues that may arise in the operator’s fleet.

F. Approval
The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved by the FAA and under the Authority of DOA No.
EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower
After you get access to the engine, you will need approximately 6 man-hours to do the inspection portion
of this Service Bulletin.

5. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. Engine Depreservation

(1) Do the depreservation of a LEAP-1B engine on wing. Refer to the Boeing 737-7/8/8200/9/10 AMM, 71-00-
03, MAINTENANCE PRACTICES, TASK 71-00-03-630-802-G00.

B. Recommendations to Minimize Opportunity for an Operational Event

(1) For LEAP-1B engines with more than 150 cycles since new (CSN), do an inspection of the scavenge
screens and oil debris monitoring system (ODMS) for debris. Refer to the Boeing 737-7/8/8200/9/10 AMM,
79-00-00, INSPECTION/CHECK, TASK 79-00-00-210-804-G00.

NOTE: If this Service Bulletin is done more than once in accordance with paragraph 3.E., Compliance, it is
not recommended to do this inspection again.

NOTE: This task can be done at any time before the first flight.

(2) For LEAP-1B engines with more than 150 CSN, do a visual inspection of the starter turbine wheel for crack-
ing or missing material. Refer to the Boeing 737-7/8/8200/9/10 AMM, 80-11-01, INSPECTION/CHECK,
TASK 80-11-01-211-802-G00.

NOTE: If this Service Bulletin is done more than once in accordance with paragraph 3.E., Compliance, it is
not recommended to do this inspection again.

NOTE: This task can be done at any time before the first flight.

(3) Install the electronic engine control (EEC) software version 6.72. Refer to LEAP-1B S/B 73-0025 (Refer to
SB: LEAP-1B-73-00-0025-01A-930A-D).

(5) If you used Kathon FP 1.5 biocide in microbial growth treatment after March 10, 2019 or if you used Kathon
FP 1.5 biocide before March 10, 2019 and the aircraft was not into regular service, contact Boeing and
CFM for additional recommendations before next flight to mitigate the opportunity for an abnormal engine
fuel system response.

NOTE: The Kathon FP 1.5 biocide was removed as an approved LEAP-1B engine fuel additive. For a list
of approved LEAP-1B engine fuel additives, refer to LEAP-1B S/B 73-0001 (Refer to SB: LEAP-

(2) RTS Recommendations Worksheet

(a) The worksheet in Table 2 through Table 5 gives a method to track the completion of individual tasks
recommended by this Service Bulletin.

(b) CFM recommends to complete this worksheet by the operator with help from a CFM field service engineer
(FSE) as necessary.

(c) CFM requests the operator complete this worksheet for each engine serial number (ESN). Engines on the
same aircraft can be combined into one worksheet.

(d) In the “Comments or Findings” section, please include any unusual observations, faults seen, additional
actions taken, or steps omitted.
