Engines
More work is necessary on Airplanes 1379, 1638, and 1917 if changed as shown in the initial release of this
service bulletin. More work for Airplanes 1379 and 1638 is to do functional check of the Thrust Rating Indicator
(TRI) for proper display as follows:
– If Airplanes 1379 and 1638 are operating with JT8D-219 engines, do Work Instruction, Part I, Step 10.
– If Airplanes 1379 and 1638 are operating with JT8D-217C engines, do Work Instruction, Part II, Step 10.
An additional 0.2 task hour is necessary for Airplanes 1379 and 1638 to do the functional check.
An additional 6.6 task hours are necessary for Airplane 1917 to do wiring changes and tests.
1. In Effectivity, Paragraph 1.A., added Airplanes 1979 and 1999 under new Group 3.
8. In Data Supplied with this Service Bulletin, Paragraph 1.J.2., added memo change with existing drawing
change letter.
9. In Parts and Materials Supplied by the Operator, Paragraph 2.C.2., added Group 3 to heading.

BACKGROUND
This service bulletin was prepared to provide information, drawings, and material requirements to incorporate
Kit Configuration Notice (KCN) K852D, which installs airplane electrical wiring for engine performance
computing system to accommodate operating JT8D-219 engines in lieu of JT8D-217C engines, and the
capability to return the airplane to JT8D-217C engines configuration by changing the wiring.
Note: The airplanes in Group 1 will be in the MD-83 gross weight configuration, and the airplanes in Groups 2
and 3 will be in the MD-82 gross weight configuration.

2. Changes wire termination on two connectors for primary engine display located on center instrument panel
in the flight compartment.
3. Changes Digital Flight Guidance Computers (DFGC) and Advance Flight Management System Computer
(AFMSC) program pin wiring at Stations Y=110.000, Y=160.00, and Y=218.000 junction boxes in the
Electrical/Electronics (E/E) compartment.
4. Does a DFGC test of affected systems and Thrust Rating Indicator (TRI) functional check for proper engine
indications.
8. The JT8D-217C engines may be installed again with procedures given in this service bulletin.

E. Compliance
The resultant modification described in Paragraph 1.D., has been shown to comply with the applicable
Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA approved for the affected airplanes listed in Paragraph 1.A.
This service bulletin and the FAA approval were based on the airplane in its original Boeing delivery
configuration or as modified by other Boeing changes.
G. Manpower
The table below shows an estimate of the task hours necessary to do this change for each airplane.
This estimate is for direct labor only, done by an experienced crew. Adjust the estimate with the
operator task hour data if necessary. The estimate does not include lost time. These are some
examples of lost time:

2. MATERIAL INFORMATION
The operator supplies the parts shown in Paragraph 2.C., Parts Necessary For Each Airplane. This
was negotiated with the operator under Kit Configuration Notice (KCN) K852D.

No special tools or equipment are necessary to do the change in this service bulletin. But,
maintenance and overhaul tools in the manuals given in Paragraph 1.J., References, can be
necessary. Examine operator tool supply to make sure all necessary tools are available.
3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNING: IF ELECTRICAL POWER IS APPLIED TO THE AIRPLANE, MAKE SURE YOU OBEY
ALL PRECAUTIONS WHILE YOU DO WORK. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE
PRECAUTIONS, DEATH OR INJURY TO PERSONS, AND DAMAGE TO THE
AIRPLANE CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: KEEP THE WORK AREA, WIRES AND ELECTRICAL BUNDLES CLEAN OF METAL
PARTICLES OR CONTAMINATION WHEN YOU USE TOOLS. UNWANTED
MATERIAL, METAL PARTICLES OR CONTAMINATION CAUGHT IN WIRE BUNDLES
CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BUNDLES. DAMAGED WIRE BUNDLES CAN CAUSE
SPARKS OR OTHER ELECTRICAL DAMAGE.
Note:
1. Manual titles are referred to by acronyms. Refer to Paragraph 1.J., References, for
definition of the acronyms.
2. Part I - Installation of program pin wiring for the Digital Flight Guidance Computers (DFGC)
will require change of JT8D-217C engines to JT8D-219 engines per Pratt and Whitney
Service Bulletin JT8D 5731 or installation of JT8D-219 engines for compatibility with the
engine performance indication system.
Part II - Installation of program pin wiring for the Digital Flight Guidance Computers
(DFGC) will require change of JT8D-219 engines to JT8D-217C engines per Pratt and
Whitney Service Bulletin JT8D 5732 or installation of JT8D-217C engines for compatibility
with the engine performance indication system.

B. WORK INSTRUCTIONS
1. Change JT8D-217C engines to JT8D-219 engines per Pratt and Whitney Service Bulletin JT8D
5731, or at operator’s option, install new JT8D-219 engines.
2. Remove the electrical power from the airplane. Refer to MD-80 AMM 24-20-00.
3. Remove and keep Engine Display Panel (EDP). Refer to MD-80 AMM 77-42-00.
4. Change wire termination on connectors P1-793 and P1-794 on EDP as shown on applicable
Service Rework Drawing.

14. Close E/E compartment door 4501A and return the airplane to a serviceable condition.
1. Change JT8D-219 engines to JT8D-217C engines per Pratt and Whitney Service Bulletin JT8D
5732, or at operator’s option, install new JT8D-217C engines.
2. Remove the electrical power from the airplane. Refer to MD-80 AMM 24-20-00.
