2. Course Title: : Introduction to Special Education: Foundation of
Special Education, Theories, Law, and Concepts

3. Prerequisite(s) :
4. Credit : 3.0 Units

5. Course Description : Understands all foundations, theories, laws, and


concepts in Special Education and provides a survey
of current knowledge on individuals with disabilities
within the context of human growth and development
across the lifespan. Includes historical factors, legal
aspects, etiology, characteristics, assessment,
evidence-based practices, and support services for
individuals having needs for intervention ranging from
mild to severe. Includes the impact of disabilities on
academic, social, and emotional performances
framed within the teaching profession.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the semester, the students should be able to:

1. Discuss significant philosophical and historical aspects of special education, as well as


emerging issues, practices and research in the field.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of disabilities including etiologies, characteristics,


specialized physical health care procedures and regulations related to such care,
educational and social impact, educational approaches, and available resources.

3. Demonstrate awareness of similarities and differences of students with and without


disabilities, and the teaching implications of diversity, including culture, language, ethnicity,
race, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, and lifestyle orientation factors.

4. Describe effective communication strategies with parents from diverse backgrounds and
professionals from other disciplines and community useful for those working with
exceptional students.

5. Evaluate current legislation pertaining to students with disabilities and their families, as
well as ethical standards related to professional practices in the field.

6. Analyze the concepts of Universal Design for Learning in inclusive classrooms

7. Apply critical reflection and thinking practices
