SUSTAINABLE
CONSUMPTION &
PRODUCTION

What is
Responsible
Production?
Responsible production requires manufacturing goods and
services in an ethical and sustainable way that minimizes
waste and pollution and supports the long-term sustainability
of surrounding communities and their natural environments.
It involves taking a range of issues on board including:

Minimizing carbon emissions at all stages of the

production process;
Cutting down on or seeking to eliminate waste;
Controlling and reducing any harmful emissions and
pollution resulting from production activities;
Ensuring that all supplies are from sustainable sources;
Monitoring and minimizing negative impacts on the
natural environments where production takes place; and
Making environmental health and safety paramount.
What is
Responsible
Consumption?
Responsible consumption is a manner of consumption that
takes into account the basis of sustainable development, that
focus on protecting Earth’s resources and communities, and
improving the quality of life of individuals and society as a
whole. It means that buyers, whether involved in the economy
as a private or public entity, or as citizen-consumers, must
make their choice taking into account environmental impacts
at all stages of the product life cycle (for both goods and
services).
Can YOU be a
responsible
consumer?
In order to be a responsible consumer provide 5
activities that save in each area (water, food and
energy), and include a PROMISE to promote
healthy consumption of the following.
5 Activities that
save Water
1. Repair leaky taps or toilets immediately. A slow drip wastes
15 to 20 gallons of water/day.

2. Do not let the faucet run when brushing teeth, or shaving.

Turn on only when needed.
3. When washing dishes by hand, fill a basin or sink for
rinsing rather than let the water run.

4. Never pour oil or grease into the drain. It requires too

much water to rinse it down and may clog the drain.

5. Reuse as much water as possible.

5 Activities that
save Food
1. Pickling food in order to make them last longer and
prevent waste.

2. Avoid buying too much food that you cannot consume to

avoid spoiling and wasting them.

3. Make good use of leftovers. “COOK ONCE, EAT TWICE."

4. To reduce waste, save leftovers and use them as an
ingredient in another meal.

5. Proper food storage can add to the life of food and reduces
food waste
5 Activities that
save Energy
1. Use LED light bulbs as it saves 50% of energy.

2. Turn off any lights and appliances and unplug gadgets

when not in use.

Plugging devices and allowing 24/7 (on standby) appliances, cause an increase in energy. Households are the main
expenditure and contributors to energy wastage. So, practice turning off and unplugging devices as it minimizes cost.
3. If using air condition systems, regularly maintain and clean
filters and condensers. Dust and debris can build up, causing
pressure and more consumption for the unit.

4. Provide proper ventilation for airflow and sunlight

penetration in the house if possible.

Plugging devices and allowing 24/7 (on standby) appliances, cause an increase in energy. Households are the
main expenditure and contributors to energy wastage. So, practice turning off and unplugging devices as it
minimizes cost.
5. If one has a refrigerator, set it at a reasonable temperature
and try defrosting the freezer from time to time.

Fridge maintenance is part of good housekeeping in ensuring it functions optimally. Part of this is taking care of
the frost that grows along the freezer walls. The easiest approach to defrosting a freezer is switching off your
appliance and leaving the ice to melt slowly, and scrapping the remains.
