ASSIGNMENTS FOR MIDTERM

1. Describe the impact of a waterborne pollutant on an aquatic community. Write a report

on how that pollutant affected aquatic life, what the effect was, and whether the effect is
linked to bio-magnification.
All kinds of water contamination are hazardous to human and
environmental life. Water contamination does not instantly affect our health, but
after long-term exposure, it can be harmful. A waterborne pollutant may have
varying effects on marine life. A lower-level pollutant may have slight to no effect
on marine life. However, the population of aquatic species can be significantly
diminished when pollutant concentration rises. A species might ingest another
organism that has consumed tiny quantities of the contaminant. The contaminant
is magnified in the consumer's body, resulting in chronic exposure. This is called
Biomagnification.

2. Explain what acid rain is. In your explanation, tell how it affects plants and the
environment and the steps society can take to help reduce its effects.
Acid rain is rain that in fact is unusually acidic and severely corrosive. It can
be defined as "rain water with a pH lower than 5.6." In marine areas, such as
streams, wetlands, and marshes, where it can be detrimental to fish and other
wildlife, acid rain is most obviously visible. In regions threatened by acid rain,
dead or dying trees are a common sight, leaving them with brown or dead leaves
and needles. Aluminum is leached from the soil by acid rain. This aluminum will
damage both plants and animals. Acid rain also extracts the soil minerals and
nutrients that plants need to grow Energy production without using fossil fuels is
a perfect way to decrease acid rain. People may use renewable sources of energy,
such as solar and wind power, instead. Since they contain much less waste,
renewable energy sources help mitigate acid rain.

3. Look around your home and determine 10 ways your family can help reduce pollution.
Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss what you have
learned.
Pollution, especially in cities and home is a growing threat to our health.
However, there are things that we can all do to restrict the amount of emissions
we accumulate and limit our carbon footprint. First is to reduce your production
from garbage. Second is make reduce, reuse and recycle as your motto, waste
can be recycled and reuse to reduce the consumption of resources and greenhouse
emissions. Third is pass on plastic, try to reduce the number of wasteful plastics
your household uses. Fourth is to use CFL or LED Lights, Compact Fluorescent
light bulbs and LED lights cut energy usage significantly compared to
incandescent bulbs. Fifth avoid using transportation, walk or ride a bike when
possible. Sixth avoid using hazardous chemicals especially in cleaning. Seventh don’t
burn garden waste, leaves, or plastic. Eight use handkerchiefs instead of tissues.
Nineth, choose Renewable Sources of Energy. Lastly, choose Renewable Sources of
Energy. My family always practice the discipline of recycling and our household use
CFL and LEV lights bulbs, by doing these disciplines we saved a lot of money, we also
help to protect the ecosystem and wildlife, also it cuts climate changing carbon
emission and lastly it saves energy.

4. Determine 10 ways to conserve resources or use resources more efficiently in your

home. Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss what you have
learned.

Natural resources are those resources that are freely accessible in

nature. For living beings, it is very useful and does not actually require the aid of humans to
grow or create. They are the basic elements needed for living beings to live. First, do not
leave electric appliances on standby mode. Second, turn off the faucet/taps when not in use
while brushing, bathing, washing clothes, dishes, etc. Third, cut down on what you throw
away. Follow the three "R's" to conserve natural resources and landfill space. Fourth The
less water you consume, the less excess water and runoff that will potentially end up in the
ocean. Fifth, Use More Renewable Energy, Resources like wind and sunlight, however, can
also be used to generate electricity, but these resources are renewable. Sixth Let clothes dry
naturally. Seventh Don’t use “throw away” products like paper plates and napkins, or plastic
knives, forks and cups. Eight, less use of plastics as it gets to mix with water bodies. Nineth,
Install energy-efficient electric appliances at homes and offices. Lastly, make less use of
paper and think before you waste a paper as papers are made from trees. I’ve learned a lot
by doing these practices, like my family can save a massive number of bucks by recycling
especially with this pandemic we’re facing. Also, I learned that we should protect our
environment because this is the only safe haven we can lean on. If we destroy our
environment humans will be the one who will suffer, so we should be responsible on every
action me make and also, we should respect this planet.
