SHEAR STRENGTH IN BEAM

EXAMPLE:

1. A simply supported beam with a span of 45 ft is laterally supported at its end and is subjected to
the following service loads
DL = 400 lb/ft (including the weight of the beam)
LL = 1000 lb/ft
If Fy=50 ksi and E = 29000 ksi, prove the adequacy of the section in shear of W14 x 90.

2. Compute the design and allowable shear strength of an S24 x 121 of A572 Grade 65 steel.

TRY THIS!

1. The beam shown in Figure is a W16 × 31 of A992 steel and has continuous lateral support. The
two concentrated loads are service live loads. Neglect the weight of the beam and determine
whether the beam is adequate.
a. Use LRFD.
b. Use ASD.

2. The cantilever beam shown in Figure is a W10 × 77 of A992 steel. There is no lateral support
other than at the fixed end. Use an unbraced length equal to the span length and determine
whether the beam is adequate. The uniform load is a service dead load that includes the beam
weight, and the concentrated load is a service live load.
a. Use LRFD
b. Use ASD
