Example Sheet D1 – Reinforced Concrete Slabs 1

In all examples on this sheet, the following data should be used:

Concrete Grade C25/30

Steel design strength 500 N/mm2
Slab cover 20 mm
Reinforcement diameter 10 mm

1. A RC slab is 125mm deep overall simply supported over a span of 2.5m. The slab is
loaded with uniformly distributed loads as follows:

Dead: self + 1.0 kN/m2

Live: 5 kN/m2

Calculate the amount of flexural reinforcement required. Also calculate the allowable
span to depth ratio assuming Asprov = Asreq and check the shear capacity.

Answers: 247 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)

Allowable L/d = 42.7 (Pass)
VcRd = 49.5 kN/m (Pass)

2. A RC slab is 250mm deep overall simply supported over a span of 4.0m. The slab is
loaded with uniformly distributed loads as follows:

Dead: self

Live: 5kN/m2

Calculate the amount of flexural reinforcement required. Also calculate the allowable
span to depth ratio assuming Asprov = Asreq and check the shear capacity.

Answers: 342 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)

Allowable L/d = 90.7 (Pass)
VcRd = 106.6 kN/m (Pass)

3. A RC slab is 225mm deep overall simply supported over a span of 4.0m. The slab is
loaded with uniformly distributed loads as follows:

Dead: self + 1.5 kN/m2

Live: 7.5 kN/m2

Calculate the amount of flexural reinforcement required. Also calculate the allowable
span to depth ratio assuming Asprov = Asreq and check the shear capacity.

Answers: 505 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)

Allowable L/d = 41.4 (Pass)
VcRd = 99 kN/m (Pass)

4. A RC slab is 225mm deep overall acting as a cantilever with a span of 3.0m. The slab is
loaded with uniformly distributed loads as follows:

Dead: self

Live: 4.0 kN/m2

Calculate the amount of flexural reinforcement required. Also calculate the allowable
span to depth ratio assuming Asprov = Asreq and check the shear capacity.

Answers: 746 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)

Allowable L/d = 9.7 (Fail)
VcRd = 102 kN/m (Pass)

5. A RC slab is 225mm deep overall acting as a propped cantilever with a span of 5.0m.
The slab is loaded with uniformly distributed loads as follows:

Dead: self

Live: 4.0 kN/m2

Calculate the amount of reinforcement required at the support and also near the
midspan. Also calculate the allowable span to depth ratio assuming Asprov = Asreq and
check the shear capacity.

Answers: Support: 514 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)

Span: 289 mm2/m (assuming T-10 bars)
Allowable L/d = 128 (Pass)
VcRd = 99 kN/m (Pass)
