Introduction

Geomagnetic storms can have significant effects on the Total Electron Content
(TEC) of the ionosphere. During a geomagnetic storm, the Earth’s magnetic
field is disturbed causing streams of charged particle to flow into the
atmosphere, these increase the ionization of the ionosphere leading to changes
in Total electron content (TEC)
The ionosphere plays a role in our everyday communications and navigation
systems. Radio and GPS signals travel through this layer of the atmosphere, or
rely on bouncing off the ionosphere to reach their destinations. In both cases,
changes in the ionosphere’s density and composition can disrupt these signals.

Problem statement

Due to continuous and predictable occurrence of geomagnetic storms caused by

coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares which have significant impacts
on the ionosphere, which is the layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is ionized
by solar radiation. The ionosphere plays a crucial role in various applications,
including communication and navigation systems, as well as satellite-based
technologies. Due to changes is the Total electron content (TEC) of the
ionosphere, the operations of these systems and technologies are affected, With
the study of the effects of geomagnetic storms on the ionosphere, the impact on
communication and navigation systems, as well as satellite-based technologies
can be reduced or even completely avoided.

Aim and objectives

Aim
To determine the effect of geomagnetic storms on the TEC for the period of
July 2012

Specific objectives

To investigate diurnal variation of TEC for the month of July 2012.

To obtain the Disturbance storm time index (Dst index) for the days when
the storm occurred.
To determine the effect of the Geomagnetic storm on the TEC of the
ionosphere.

Significance

1 The study will also help engineers who construct telecommunication

systems to be aware of the hazardness of these storms such that they can
construct strong systems that are resistant to geomagnetic storms

Methodologies

Data for diurnal variation of TEC for the month of july will be obtained from
my Supervisor
Graphs of variation of TEC with time of the day will be plotted using matlab.
The graphs will be studied to see the days with sudden changes in TEC, then
the Disturbance storm index values for those days will be obtained form
https : //wdc.kugi.kyoto − u.ac.jp/dstf inal/201201/index.html.
study the relationship between the tec variation and DST values for the days
before, during and after the storm with Disturbance storm index for those days.
