Research question : How can we implement adaptive reuse strategi

buildings? What is the use and scope of work in conserving those buildings rather

than demolishing? 1.2. Introduction

: India is known for its heritage and the vast styles of architecture in buildings. Indi

an architecture got influenced by a lot of ruling generations. One of the most promi

nent ruling governments is the British India government. The British introduced Engli

sh medicine in the mid 1600s during their first visit to India and established public

health care in the 19th and 20th centuries to prevent disease outbreaks back then.

In the initial days they constructed hospitals only for their officers and families but

after the air borne disease outbreaks they had to provide public health care to pre

vent the infections. The British built around 1200 hospitals by the late 19th century

and increased health care by constructing more than 2500 hospitals by the early 2

0th century (Muhammad Umar Mushtaiq, 2009). Some of those buildings are still fu

nctional and are being used as primary sources for health care. They are serving

as full scale hospitals with current technology. 13

Regenerative architecture is the practice of engaging nature and using the building

masses as a source of nature by producing and contributing to the natural environ

ment instead of consuming energy. The heritage buildings have shown the characte

r of responding to the climate and are energy efficient with the

surroundings. In the case of Osmania General Hospital, it is a 19th century buildin

g constructed by the last ruler of Nizam. On July 27th, 2023, the state government

passed an order to demolish the building, stating it is unfit to serve as a hospital

and hence declared to provide a new plan and demolish the structure. To understand

regenerative design techniques and to implement 14

adaptive reuse of heritage buildings is the prime focus of this research. 1.3.
