Universiti Malaya, or UM
1. Malaysia's oldest university
2. situated on a 922 acre (373.12 hectare) campus
3. the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

 It was founded on 28 September 1905 in Singapore as the King

Edward VII College of Medicine
 8th October 1949 ： became the University of Malaya with the
merger 合并 of the King Edward VII College of Medicine + Raffles
College (founded in 1928).
 Name derives from : term 'Malaya' ( the country was then known)
 The Carr-Saunders Commission 委员会 on University Education in
Malaya ：recommended the setting up 建立 of the university
-noted in its Report in 1948: "The University of Malaya would
provide for the first time a common centre where varieties of race 种
族, religion 宗教 and economic interest 经济利益 could mingle in
joint endeavour 可在共同努力下融合... For a University of Malaya
must inevitably 不可避免的 realise that it is a university for
Malaya."

1. growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade 第一
个十年 of its establishment 成立

 this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous 自主

Divisions on 15/1/ 1959, one located in Singapore and the
other in Kuala Lumpur
 In 1960, the government of the two territories 领土 indicated
表明 their desire 愿望 to change the status of the Divisions
into that of a national university
 Legislation 立法 was passed 通过 in 1961
 UM : established 成立 on 1st January 1962.

The Board of Studies 研 究 委 员 会 was set up by the Universiti
Malaya, located then in Singapore, recommended the establishment of

TYfacilities 设施 for students taking

a Department of Engineering 工程系 to provide degree courses on the
civil side 民事方面 and to provide
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to take part of their courses at
the University before proceeding overseas to complete their degrees.

1954

 The Engineering Department was set up 

 First Professor of Engineering ：C.A.M. Gray
 Teaching began in the 1955 - 1956 session in Singapore, with
the intake of Year I students and Year II students (i.e students
who had joined the Faculty of Science in the 1954 - 1955
session with the hope of taking 继 续 修 读 Engineering after
completing their first year in science).
